I use Firefox most of the time for browsing. On my new M2 some web sites don't end up using the entire screen - they fill top to bottom but not left to right. Didn't happen on my old Air and doesn't happen with Safari. I can use zoom but..
See example.

cnn.com is like that on every browser in my M1 Air. So I doubt that's an issue. Try using private/incognito windows in other browsers, and optionally do a hard refresh, and see if the same thing happens.

Doesn't happen with Safari or didn't on my previous Air.
Happens with MacRumors also and other sites.

Macrumors in Microsoft Edge does not go edge to edge when I maximize the window, but if there's anyone who can get that to happen, then I suppose my Air is even more defective than yours. I seldom maximize windows because I prefer to have them overlapping so it's no big deal to me. The only time I maximize is streaming video, and it's always worked for disney+, etc, and still does.
