Scary,

I think the right answer is a MBP for the following reasons:

1. You have more flexibility in storage compared to the MBA. From the things you listed that you want to do, it seems likely you might need more space than the MBA max of 256 MB.

2. As you stated, portability maybe a necessity, so this requirement means iMac is not the optimal solution.

3. As for the MBA, you can purchase a separate monitor later down the road. If you need to move to another location, you can always sell the monitor to curb your travel weight and buy a new, maybe upgraded, monitor once you settle down again.

Good luck with your degree, it sounds like you have an interesting option in being able to go abroad.

In light of the flaws with the SB processors and the fact that I need a good computer now with the spring semester starting, I went ahead and bought a 13" MBP refurb I've been eyeing. For $999, I can live with C2D in a MBP. The speed is actually perfectly fine for my needs, but on principle I couldn't justify buying a brand spankin' new laptop with C2D at full price. But for $999, I feel like I'm getting a pretty good deal. If I end up needing more speed down the road, I can add more RAM.

That seems a good compromise: you can easily add an external
monitor and keyboard if you need more real estate when using it at home.
I have an old black 13" MB with a C2D and it's fine for most things I ask it to do!

Indeed, I would have gotten a MBA 11" in the first place if could have afforded it. The 27" iMac isn't even in the picture. Under $1400 folks. $1500 tops.

P.S. I'm not a guy. Check the avatar- Femme = Girl.

OOps, sorry dude...
I shall start paying attention who I'm talking to/about in future. lesson learned.

Haha, thanks. In most forums, I would ignore that sort of thing, but with any forums/blogs related to tech, the assumption that all members are guys gets irritating.

ETA- I also just noticed that it's not showing my avatar for some reason. XD
