 Download something from P2P, are you insinuating i do something illegal ? Although i suppose tis only illegal if i play/use what i've downloaded (is it?).

I've often wondered whether Macs really are super secure or whether because windows is more popular, people spend more time trying to exploit it's vunerabilities.

Easy:

1-Macs are cheaper
2-Macs are faster
3-Macs use the latest components available
4-Macs are a good investment because they can be easily upgraded
5-Macs have more softwares, especially games.

Oh no, wait, it's the other way around!

LOL!

I must say macs are much cheaper during the life of the machine. A mac's cost of ownership is MUCH cheaper. Also investment wise, there's no comparison, macs ARE the better investment as they:

• Hold their value much longer than a generic PC
• Mac users keep their machines on average twice as long as PC users

More "softwares"? Try to get equaivalent apps to the iApps on Windows (integration, quality, price), good luck. Games? Please, get a console...or grow up. ;)

Lol Harsh!

You have the same G5 as the one i'm getting Mr Pants, please tell me. Is it a beast, will i weep at it's awesome power?

EDIT:

Awesome Power to be read as spoken in the "Mr Sparkle" advert from the simpsons...

Why I switched

I switched in 2001 from Windows to Mac.

I found that windows machines never could handle what I needed to do, wether it be typing a Word document, trying to cancel a print job from the spool (This especially caused the OS to freak out ), Work on a Photoshop document ( trying to run Illustrator was a joke ), or burn a CD.
The Windows OS was always sluggish and giving me grief and complaining about something with its annoying popup error messages. Then there was all the spyware, viruses, dealing with Symantec products hogging all the available system resources, and installing too many of Microsofts updates.
Networking Windows is a freaking nightmare, for those who have not send months or possibly years in MCSE classes. At one point in time I had networked at home 2 desktops running Win2K, one notebook running XP, and a Mac running Jaguar, then poof one day the two Win2K desktops decided they werent going to participate on the network, then the laptop followed. Trying to hold a group therapy session and get them all to play nice on the network and talk to each other took some time to do.
Before I had switched I was running WIN2k, and noticed that it was acting more strange then usual, so I decided to backup all my files to CD.
I had burned about half of what I needed to to CDs, I did not recieve any error messages during the burns, then the computer crashed and it crashed HARD. I had to run Safe mode to get back into the system, all my files were either gone or corrupt. I had to reinstall the OS, because the system was so trashed that it wouldnt boot normally, and would only boot using safe mode.
So once I reinstalled the OS, I grabbed the back up CDs to try to get things back to normal. The CD's were unusable, the burns were botched. I could see files on the CD's, but they were corrupt and the file sizes were 0 k. So I gave Microsoft a big hardy "Thank you for destroying my portfolio", and a "Your number one Microsoft" (Using a choice finger for the #1) and went out and bought my Mac.

Now whenever a friend or co-worker seeks help with their windows machine, I shrug my shoulder and say something along the linces of Im sorry I cant help you, I have wasted too much time, energy, and emotions in trying to deal with Windows OS in my life, I suggest you invest in a Mac.

I have had no problems with my Mac.

A good point! As i am quite knowledgable in the world of windows i am constantly innundated with people asking for my help "Oh but i'll pay you", they say and by that they mean £5 and if it ever goes wrong again they'll wake me at 3am and request i come over straight away. It has happened before that i've been to fix some minor internet issue and then a week later ther hard disk has gone pear shaped, this is then blamed on me! So from now on I shall just say that i only deal in macs, and will support them when they switch.

There are many, many reasons, but the main reason is the amount of thought that has gone into the design of the OS. No DLL hell, no registry, perfect security/stability/multi-tasking, maintenance/troubleshooting must be as simple as possible. Windows is far too complex to maintain (cq a complete failure in design, that is why Longhorn takes so long), it takes an IT expert to do this, and even then the easy way out is many times a rebuild. OK let me stop here.

I did. I tells ya - there's nothing like a nice G5... I would have exploded if i'd been able to afford a dual-2.7... I thought I'd seen everything with my PB G4... boy was I wrong...!

Geoff, I never get bashed for having a mac. The reason being? I let my work speak for itself. When showing friends an edit I've done or whatever they'll be like "what did you do that on?" and I'm like "Final Cut" and they're always cursing me 'cos it's mac only... i wouldn't have it any other way

Yey! I'm thinking of shelling out for Final Cut Studio as i do love video editing and i can get a lovely student discount on it.

Question is can i create my own Star Wars style text fading into the background thing?

Excellent, thats always the way with Mac, you can do what you want out of the box.

I was dead impressed when i went into the birmingham apple store to ask about which model to get and the guy there said "what do you want it for" and I said "oh, music, video editing, photoshop...". At the Windowsy shop i work at this would have been call for sharp indrawing of breath and quoting of most expensive system available that might do it if they're lucky. But no the guy just said "oh, right, the normal stuff then. just get an iMac with plenty of RAM"

Shocked i decided to do entirely the opposite of what he said and went for a Power Mac with barely any RAM (which i will increase ASAP).

Still I was very impressed.

OS X. That's the number one reason I switched just a week ago! I'm a Windows Admin, and a closet Linux geek. For the past two years I've been contemplating this switch. I would have went full Linux, but the software for digital imaging just isn't available. OS X fills that void more wonderfully than I could ever have imagined.

I love it. Windows box is already sitting unplugged in the basement, and frankly, if I didn't earn my money supporting Windows, Active Directory etc., I would never touch it again! :D

I used to take my iBook to some of my classes. I got comments like:

- "ooh that was neat"
- "I can't believe that worked"
- "that wouldn't work in Windows!"
- "imagine eating titanium toast" (I was making a CD)
- "who makes the Mac version of Office?"
- "yeah but it's not actually Microsoft Office is it?"
- "your battery meter is wrong"
- "you really get 5 hours?!"

I installed Linux once... when it came to the point i couldn't actually work out how to install any applications (and i'd like to feel i'm not completely useless when it comes to these things) I gave up and decided it was for people who will sacrifice all useability for stability. So that was the end of unix based stuff for me....

.... Until Now!

I switched to Mac because...

1. I am sick of worrying about Trojan viruses.

2. Whenever I remove a program, Windows would tell me that the file is shared with another program and if I REALLY want to delete it. It's like playing Russian Roulette. In OS X, simply drag it to the trash. Try that with Windows.

3. Mac designs ROCK!

4. Granted that there are not a lot of software around. The ones that are around are really good and almost bug-free.

5. Goes well with my iPod :D

6. I know that whatever peripherals I buy (with mac logo on it) would work first time round.

7. iPhoto is a breeze to use.

8. iDVD is fabulous. My folks were in awe when they saw my slide shows
:D

9. OS X doesn't crash. Everything is contained. If a program crashes, just restart it.

10. Hardware prices are slowly coming down.

Never had the chance to switch myself. My mom made the mistake* of purchasing a Mac as my first computer for middle school. There has been nothing but Macs at my house/dorm/apt since.

*best mistake, ever.

RE:

I have switched to Apple because it is a far more superior and a more professional personal computer than a Windows PC.

Why?

1.MAC OSX-built on UNIX(Solid as a Rock)
2.Much more beautiful user interface and Apps
3.It has virtual PC for all the little apps that won't run on a Mac
4.It still has the PC essentials such as MS Office
5.The OS isn't slapped together and runs silky smooth
6.All the hardware is designed by Apple unlike a PC which has parts from hundreds of manufactures
7.Preview is the fastest PDF viewer on the planet
8.Virtually virus and adware free
9.Many more elegant fonts,a lot more
10.Fast User Switching
11.Expose'...find the window you need
12.FileVault,to protect your files,Would take a computer a trillion years to hack
13.Very compatible with Windows, share files and documents, connect to the network
14.A bunch of drivers to allow plug and play
15.Built for Multitasking, won't slow down when a bunch of apps are running
16.Great for video and image editing,Windows can't touch it
17.With PowerPC g5 processors,they run more effecient
18.Very fast DVD and CD burning
19.You never have to do CTRL ALT DEL on a Mac
20.Dashboard allows you to have multiple widges that have stocks, dictionary, converter and many many more little apps to help with your everyday life
21.The performance on Photoshop is untouchable
22.64 bit computing
23.Firewire and bluetooth extreme
24.make your own music easily and professionaly with garageband
25.Spotlight lets you find any file on your computer, even emails, superfast
26.good use of OpenGL
27.easy to use
28.They simply "WORK"
29.Because I can actually operate the computer without spending time to fix it.
30.Anyone who lives with a Mac for a week or more would love it and never want to get rid of it
31.Although Mac's aren't that great for gaming there are plenty of good Mac titles, and what do you think they developed home video game consoles for?A computer is to compute, not to play games on.

RE:

My 366 MHz oldschool iBook runs faster than my dad's 1 GHz PC,which is rather funny. Microsoft Office is available for Mac,it rocks. I went to CompUSA,the POWERMAC and eMac playing games ran a lot smoother and better than the ALienWare I saw at GameStop. The only thing Windows has over Mac is games, not because Mac can't handle games, but because developers don't want to spend time developing games for the Mac platform, but hopefully oneday this will change, but for now there are hundreds of MAC games. Any computer shouldn't be bought because of games,I'd take a console over any PC,they weren't made for games and aren't ideal for games IMHO,especially laptops.

Who cares. You switched to Mac because you wanted to. Seems to me like you're searching for acceptance. If you're happy with the decision, that's all that should matter. Nothing else to explain.

I switched to Mac because....

...I got an iPod. That thing was AWESOME ant easy to use. Then, I dogsat for someone, and they made me a guest account on their G4 iMac. I used it while the dog ate, and HOLY CRAP, I fell in love.

So, I started saving $$ for an iBook. I eventually got one from a Pawn Shop on Sept 3, 2004, and I haven't looked back.
Then, I won a sweet 15 inch PowerBook on Tiger night.

MAN, I love not dealing with viruses and trojans and adware and spyware... I love using a program instead of dealing with the constant crashes.

Also, I look so much cooler carrying a PowerBook than any Sony computer.
Hahaha.

There are SO MANY great responses in this thread!! For me, the answer is simply - "Have you seen the iMac G5??"
Enough said.
