I emailed Steve a few hours ago.. no answer yet. I'll let you know if he does though :)

Aren't you essentially doing what you say that article is doing? No one really knows, so I would say what anyone says *could* be inaccurate.

Perhaps. We know that:

1. The iPhone 4 uses the A4 System on Chip, which contains two 128MB RAM modules. The same one the iPad uses.

2. The leaked iPhone 4s that were dissected were confirmed to have two 128MB RAM modules. Basically nothing differed between the leaks and the final product either.

3. Apple has not come out and said ANYTHING about increased RAM, which is something they did with the iPhone 3GS.

The only report that it has 512MB of RAM was from a month-old DigiTimes article where an industry analyst says he expects it to. Almost every other reports indicates 256MB of RAM, which is what it really has. But, no, I don't know for sure, you are right on that part. But I betcha I am right.

Mahalo.com is Jason kalikanis' site i believe...not sure if he would know anything like this...

And yes..the 3GS is now in 8gb size....check apples site..

The iPhone 3GS was all about speed. Thats why they mentioned it then. Clock speed and RAM really doesn't matter what so ever on a phone so why fuss about it?

huh? The iPad is 1024x768 which is an HD format. 960x640 is not. Not to mention the iPad screen is more than double the size.

So your saying that the technology to get 326 pixels in an inch is less impressive than the technology to get 132? It's not all about resolution and size!

Jobs was up there calling videochat an amazing reality...I'm pretty sure he would have mentioned a huge increase in processing power.

How different is the architecture in the A4 from the processor in the 3gs? Cause say they do under clock it to say 800mhz to save battery and have the same 256mb of ram that isnt much of a power increase.

But I know in computers clockspeed means nothing. I'm just not familiar with ARM based processors.

I dont even care if they underclock it but I would loveee 512mb of ram just so I dont have to see that goddamn checkerboard texture in safari when I scroll too fast. but its prob 256

I hope it's 512, but we really don't know yet.

I'm still completely baffled that a room full of journalists at the keynote contained *no one* with the wit to ask.

In the Q&A session they didn't have?

Likely almost the exact same. It's the peripheral I/O support type chips that are likely different. It will also have its own special power management chip. The reason that the A4 is 1 GHz vs. 3GS's speed is that it's manufactured on a 45 nm process compared to the 65 nm process or the 3GS. This allows it to be clocked higher.

I believe the 3gs is also a cortex a8 generation code, so mhz for mhz should be near enough same, excepting perhaps for any tweaks in size of cache and such.

More to the dozens of Apple reps there to answer questions at the Facetime demos afterwards.

They're there to answer questions about things that were announced. They have no need to know what speed the A4 is clocked at. We didn't find out what speed the 3GS was from WWDC. Only reason we knew about the A4 was that they advertised it as 1 GHz.

The fact that Steve did'nt say 1ghz A4, really makes me think it is clocked down.

A variable clock would be cool, clock up to 1ghz for video editing, clock down below 200mhz for typing an email.

it will be interesting to see how well iMovie works... HD video editing on a PHONE!!!! WOW.

HD video editing is a burden on a quad core i7 system oced to 3.5ghz. (Though I am using Pinnacle 14, one of the worse optimized video editing programs)

I would be shocked silly to learn that it would have 512mb of ram. (Actually just for kicks and giggles, that would match the specs of the computer I was fixing at work today, someone had a really old pc with XP on it. We convinced them to get new Dells.)
