That is my conundrum actually. Do I pay 899 for the CD BlackBook or 1199 for the 2.0 old MacBookPro (512 MB /128 MB VRAM)? That is not a huge price difference considering I will be upgrading the RAM regardless of the machine. I have a few days to decide before my promotion is over on 12/31.

How are you guys/girls getting a 2.0 old MacBookPro for 1199????

Apple US offers $1299 for 1.83:(

I agree with all that. The thing I am most worried about is the lack of screen real estate on the MB. I do have an external display for when I am at home so maybe that is not such a big deal.

I have also thought that if I buy the cheaper one, I can getter justify upgrading my computer sooner. Of course 1199 is not exactly super expensive especially for a MBP.

I use a MBP for work and like it outside the annoying buzzing sound (which could be fixed under warranty). The keyboard is also a bit flimsy...one key broke off when my cat decided to use it as a heating pad while I was in the shower.

My girlfriend has the White MacBook and loves it and I must say the battery seems to last a lot longer on her MB than my work MBP (I am leaving my company so I have to give back my computer).

See, I just bought my wife a White MacBook (upgraded her from an iBook G4) for Christmas as well and she enjoys it immensely. The battery lasts a good 4-5 hours, and I love the new keyboard design. It's very firm and easy to clean. We even downloaded the 30-day free trial of Aperture and it runs just fine with no slowdown (Granted, we did up the RAM to 1.25 GB).

I guess my biggest reservations about the Blackbook are the scratches (I don't want it to look like crap in 2-3 years) and the screen size. It also just doesn't have the "WOW" factor that the MBP has, but the MBP is $300 more for basically the same processor, RAM, and hard drive space. THEN there's the part of me that screams "WAIT UNTIL AFTER MWSF, YOU IDIOT!" but I am just so eager to get my hands on a new Mac, and I don't see them releasing any improvements aside from iLife '07 in January.

I just don't want to regret my purchase. I think I'm even more unsure now than when I started typing.

MBP is cold to touch.
With MBP theres allways the "OMG my mac just accidentally "crashed" on something OMG wheres is teh scratch??!!!!" factor.
If u get the BM u wll cover it with fingerprint in a matter of seconds.
If u want to do some serious video editing + Motion stuff get the MBP.

i'm going to be doing more photoshop work with some home video editing but not much. so the screen quality is more important for me. macbook has a great screen the mbp's is quite pathetic from what i saw in the stores. I will eventually get an external monitor but even then most of the time i work on my bed or in the living room and i don't think the 13" would suffice.

then again, a smaller, better quality screen is better than a larger crappy screen. I'm going to be waiting either way until after macworld. good luck to those guys who have to decide in the next few days. I wouldn't know what to do.

Why artificially decide to keep it 3 years?

Your needs are modest now, as is your income. By a modest machine where you can save a few bucks for other things, like possibly, software licenses.

In time, as you income and needs increase, package up your old machine for sale, and use the money towards your new machine.

Rinse and recycle through the course of your career with Macs.

Just curious: why doesn't the MB's single FW port suffice? I connect mine to an external HD that way.

One port is certainly enough for me, as my drive has a port too - ie. I can daisy-chain another FW device.

Motion

Actually Motion might not be too horrible.. According to these benchmarks, the core duo (not C2D) Macbook was faster than a dual 2.0 G5 desktop in Motion on three of four tests:

No way, editing on a macbook!? I would rethink that. A thirteen inch screen is pretty small to edit on unless you plan on doing most of your editing on an external monitor. Plus, if you plan on using FCPstudio, motion is going to run like a dog with the integrated graphics, and your are going to want to do at least some simple stuff in motion that FCP doesnt do internally very well.
If I were you I would really reconsider going with the macbook.:)

I have a blackbook at home and an MBP with matte screen and i would take the MBP any time of the day. The again i just do photo editing and web site design as hobby.

Have you made your choice yet? I am heavily leaning towards the BlackBook, but haven't committed yet to a purchase.

I have not made the purchase either, but I am also leaning towards the BlackBook. I will probably pull the trigger today.

Since i do it just as an hobby and most of the work is CSS and XHTLM i dont care about the screen quality. I just said i prefer the MBP's screen because i hate to see my reflex on MB's screen.

I am not a screen expert and I can hardly evaluate if a screen is good or not (past a certain level) on a designers perspective.

Ok, I've decided to hold off until the last possible minute, but I have a couple of final questions:

1. The latch in the MBP is magnetic, while the MB has no latch and is just held closed by magnets. Does the MBP's screen sit perfectly flush to the body when closed?

2. Do you think I'll ever find a MBP for $1199 ever again? In case you're wondering, it's the refurb 2.0 GHz Core Duo that's selling in the Apple Store right now for $1349. I get a $150 rebate until December 31st.

3. At $899 for the BlackBook, and $1199 for the MBP, which gives more bang for the buck?
