Hello All!! I've been reading these forums for the last six months (finally registered in May) & everyone here has been EXTREMELY helpful. I've been a PC user since the early 90's, so I was pretty hesitant to make the switch to a Mac. However, I have just become soo frustrated with Micro$oft & their crappy OS (not to mention viruses, pop-ups, etc) that I decided to make the switch. I just now pulled the trigger on a BRAND NEW MBP!! I've been saving up for quite awhile, so this is an EXCITING day for me :D !!! I definitely did more research on this than I have any other purchase I've made.

I purchased the base-model MBP 2.2Ghz with a glossy screen. I went ahead & spent the extra $$ for 2-3 day shipping, but it says that it'll ship by July 27- Aug 1 & Delivered by July 31 - Aug 6. How accurate are these estimates usually?? (Especially since I paid for expedited shipping.) I hope it gets here sooner than that -- I start law school on Aug. 14th & I'm sure I won't be able to pick up on everything about the OS in a week

I've done a lot of searching through the forums, so I won't ask what programs I should install once I get it....But if anyone out there uses their Mac for law school, I'd sure be interested to hear what programs you specifically use for school. I've seen some OmniOutliner Pro tutorials on-line, so I am thinking about using that for taking notes in class. Anybody else use this? Any other advice you guys have would be greatly appreciated!!

I'm sure that I'll have many more questions once my MBP arrives. Hope everyone can put up with yet another :apple: newb!!

    Hey -

I go to UH Law Center. Where are you going - Baylor or Tech?

Anyways, the only law school software you will need is examination software. UH uses electronic Blue Book, but there are other apps out there as well. Cal the school's IT department and ask them which software they use for taking exams. I am sure they will cover this during orientation as well.

The only other thing we use is Cisco VPN for accessing external web sites, and accessing email from home. Email is another issue you may want to clear up with IT. UH uses a web mail interface for MS Exchange. The Mac Office email client - Entourage - is not that great.

Good luck in law school - you gonna need it :D

hey man, I ordered a 2.2 matte today with the upgraded 7200 drive. it says the latest ship date is Aug. 7. I just got the free shipping.

I think a lot of times the ship dates are liberal and it's shipped quicker than you would expect because of the dates they give. So, just expect the worst and it should be sooner than you think. :)

I'm too starting law school in August,(Regent University in Virginia Beach) but not till the 22nd. I'm not sure what programs I will be using yet. I'm going to do more research on that after i get my hands on my MBP. I know we use ExamSoft for exams here but it's only for Windows...I know they're looking at allowing parallels or bootcamp.

    We'll be in touch.

I'm going to Tech. I got into UH, Rice, Texas, & SMU..but i did my undergrad at Tech -- so I was a little biased when I made my final decision. Haha. What programs do you use for note taking? Organization/calendar?

I'll be starting my 3L at KU this fall. I used my lil 12" PB for my 1L & 2L year and will be getting a 15" MBP in August.

The only software I used for notes is/was Word. It's easy and I'm really familiar with it. PLus, you'll be getting a lot of outlines from upper classmen which at KU are all in Word. I use iCal for calendar.

    Good luck in law school.
