Call me slow, but I did just now figure this out.
Without the autofill working in new email addresses, I clicked on the address book in MM, clicked on a name in the address book, and it brought up all the info on them, including their email address. Clicking on the email address opens a new email form with their email address filled in in the TO column. Not the easiest or most elegant solution, but I no longer have to open the address book in the dock to look at peoples email addresses when I want to email someone.
