right now it is at 7.xx and it is working fine. would the upgrade slow it down?
 
If it was me, I wouldn't bother upgrading. A5 processor machines with 512MB of RAM seem to hit that upper floor limit with iOS8.
 
I'm running 8 on an original iPad Mini, and I have no complaints. I've noticed no decrease in performance.
