it's just compatible with Apple's notebooks, don't know about the desktops..

Only works on the Unibodies I believe.

Apple have certainly been fiddling around with the protocol they use on the new in-line remotes though e.g. volume control doesn't work on the iPhones, but does on iPod nano, Classic and new shuffle. I assume volume control doesn't work on the notebooks?

You can use USB OverDrive to make any usb type controller do this on any Mac machine that has a USB connector should you so desire. 🙂
