I love the...

"So, you're telling me you don't get viruses?"

"nope"

"So, when you say no viruses, what exactly do you mean? You have Norton or something, right?"

"Nope, no Nortaon, and no viruses mean no viruses."

"So, let me get this straight...."

:D

I switched my cousins wife very easily. They were looking for a laptop and i had gotten hold of an old G3 iBook for 500yo yo's. I just brought it down and she asked how much it was and it was sold. She bought it because it was cute but now she see's how powerful OSX is.

Actually i made her switch before i switched :D I bought myself a new iBook a month later and now have a Mini on the way (i'm still switching so i couldnt justify the price of an iMac when i already had a Dell 2005FPW).

I switched my husband. But I'm working on switching a friend to mac. It's pretty cool to see someone you know and love do something that will make their life better! :D

The first thing you should du with a new (portable) Mac is to charge the battery all the way up to full (and add some), then let disconnect power and wear the battery all the way down to zero (or as close as you get before the Mac goes to sleep to save anything), then reconnect power and let it charge all the way up to 100% again. This way the Power Management Unit will learn the battery's range and the battery is calibrated. (<-- One of my typical "close enough" explanations... ;))

Then, to keep the battery healthy, you should repeat the discharge and then fully recharge about once a month.

More on battery care

Enjoy your Mac.

God, people annoy me. I posted this in the Appletalk forum over at iexbeta.com.....

Quote from someone there:
I think the same thing could be said if he upgraded to a non-junk computer. Give that mac mini 10 years and it'll be screwed too.

I'm not going against Apple, I just don't really understand some of your points. He knew Internet as that big "E" on the desktop? Well now what-- a big globe? Who cares??

Argh.
I don't mean to be an ass, but I sort of agree with the guy: it's not too hard to impress someone using an old virus/spyware laden machine. You could have impressed him with a clean new windows machine or even with a properly selected and configured linux machine.

However, I do think putting him on a Mac was a good idea (I'm not a real mac person). He would invariably have run into the spyware/virus problem with windows again and would have much more trouble using anything beyond the programs that show up on his desktop with linux.

I personally bought my first mac recently. I like it and use it as my primary desktop but I wouldn't personally evangelize the platform actively. I think anyone who is comfortable on windows and is capable of keeping it relatively secure is probably best off using a windows machine as their main box. Anyone with more serious geek tendencies and room to experiment I'd point towards linux or a complete bsd. However, if anyone asks (or makes fun of me for having a mac) I explain why it's not the devil that so many people seem to think, why I like it (a decent system underneath the gui, and the effects like expose turn me on :p) and suggest that they give the platform proper consideration.

At the end of the day I don't think it matters whether more people use windows or mac or linux, so long as they pick what's best for them (and that no system ever gains complete dominance). ... And Mac's deserve more respect than they get :) ...
