I just ordered a refurb MacBook Pro

hey jamblo,

how was the condition? packaging?

machine 'nearly' new?

any info on the whole refurb experience would be great.

Well, "Wow!" pretty much sums up the MacBook Pro!

Packaging = Brown box with "Reconditioned by Apple" or something simililar on the side, then the standard MBP packaging inside. The remote still had its cellophane wrap on it. The manual's case was a little crumbled, but everything else was fine.

So far, so impressed. Only had about half an hour to play around with it last night. Can't see a single blemish or dead pixel (as yet!).

Can only assume it was ordered in error or something, because it clearly hasn't been used before! I would now highly recommend the refurb store, as I have bagged myself a £1599 laptop for £1150! Superb!

More info once I've had a proper play!

edit // just checked the price at the Apple store, turns out the model I own would be £1599! £450 saving!
 
Ordered a refurb too

I've looking at the refurb store alsmost daily - umming and ahhing over buying the 2Ghz Macbook or not. It would be a vast improvement over my 15" 1.5GHz Powerbook (which has served me well but is starting to show it age now).

This morning a 2.16Ghz Macbook Pro with a 7200rpm 100GB Hard Disk showed up on the refurb store for £1233.75, only £70 more than the 2GHz version.

The umming and ahhing has now stopped as this bargain was too much to pass up! I placed my order this morning and also managed to use one those £20 +VAT vouchers that Apple keep sending me but have never used. So total is £1210.25 shipped.😀

I have received the conrifimation email - deleivery estimate is 11th July. I'll post my impressions when it arrives.

the only reason you went for the 2.16 is cos i just got my 2.0Ghz Macbook - jammy sod 😀

Yeah - mine arrived at home this afternoon, but I'm 160(ish) miles away working in London. Damn.
Wife phoned and said it looks in perfect condition, so I'm looking forward to getting home on thursday now. Mental note: must remember to say hi to the wife & kids BEFORE setting up MBP...😉

I got a Refurb MBP 2.0GHz/100GB/1GB about a week before the 17" model was announced. Absolutely *love* it, and while I was at the local Apple Store last weekend, I saw the 17", and I'm actually glad I didn't wait for it to be released. Those things are *huge*. I'll probably end up getting my wife either a MacBook or Mac Mini in the next year. (She's always wanting to use my MBP.)
 
Its shipped

Not sure why, but its already been shipped and should be here Thursday according to the delivery estimate.

Can't wait😎
 
can't wait either - my refurb mbp should be here in a couple of days. still can't believe apple are selling these superb maschines at 905£ (including 23 discount). also ordered the 20gig refurb ipod photo for 60 quid 😀

any issues with dead pixels?

"£23 inc VAT discount, valid until 30/06/06 on a minimum order of £235 (1)." (not valid in the education store.. grr) the code is SSPZ9PSMR9, as far as I know you can use them more than once. it's from a mail apple sent me (got atleast 5 of them in the past couple of months)

Mine's arrived

Whilst I was at work today I got a phone call from home - it's arrived.

That's less than 24 hours from order to arrival on a refurb- that's gotta be a record! The freaky thing is that it was despatched before I ordered it (even taking into account the fact that their times are in GMT and we are currently using BST).

Only problem is as I'm at work will have to wait until this afternoon before I can play with it.🙁

P.S. I get loads of the £23 vouvhers in email from Apple - trouble is you need to spend over £230 to use it and i rarely spend that much in one go on the store. Strictly speaking they are not supposed to be used with refurb products but I'm not complaining.

Congrats, guys! I've been using my refurb Powerbook since January without a hitch (besides ones that were self-created!) and would thoroughly recommend it. It is a great savings for those of us who can't quite afford a Mac. And I may be wrong, but I think they(Apple) check their refurb models more thoroughly than the fresh-from-the-factory ones. I also got a bump in my hard-drive capacity and it came with Tiger instead of Panther (which is what I was told I would be getting), all without asking. The only difference, IMO, is the price and the brown packaging.
 
When does the UK refurb store update itself everyday for its stock content?

Previously it used to be on wednesdays at 10.00am but then the store switched to a daily refurb store.

It no longer updates at 10.00am but seems to update at an earlier time. Does anyone know when it does?

Update

Sorry for the late response...

The Macbook Pro had no issues and looked as new. I occasionally noticed a slight whine when the charger was plugged in (just like my 15" Powerbook) and a couple of times whilst in use without charger; but it was very quiet. There was absolutely no mooing of any kind. It only got hot when pushing the hard disk a lot, but it wasn't too hot to touch.

It was fast in some areas and slow in others, anything Universal that was processor intensive was much faster e.g. Handbrake was 6x faster at ripping DVD's. Once Photoshop was loaded it was about the same speed as my Powerbook; both 'books were much slower than my Dual Core PC with Photoshop. I am so looking forward to Adobe creative suite 3. MS Office was very useable and the Apple apps were a few seconds faster here and there but nothing amazing.

On the issue of Apps, some critical ones are still not available, e.g. Flip4Mac. Delicious Library is slow as a dog and I couldn't get the built in isight to detect any barcode. However I loved the built-in isight for video conferencing and the scrolling track-pad with right-click function is a simple but excellent inclusion.

However, I belive that intel macs are an excellent idea and that in a years time 90% of all of the apps needed will be Universal or at least "intel aware".

I would have kept the MBP, but missed the FW800 port and I realised that I also wanted a 17" screen. So it has gone back and I am waiting for these to show up on the refurb store or I'll get a new one if Apple updates the line in the not too distant future. Either way I'm looking forward to a 17" MBP.
 
So did you return your 15" MBP for the 17" one? Sorry, didn't quite follow your post. The MBPs are just simply awesome machines aren't they?

Yes and No.

I returned the 15" MacBook and haven't yet got a 17" one yet. The Apple sales guy I spoke to didn't charge me for the return postage as I said I wanted the 17" version. I'm hoping to see one on the UK refurb store soon or if Apple upgrade them in the not-too-distant future I might pay full price for a new one.

And yes the MBPs are indeed awesome; the entire Apple HW lineup is getting better and better - can't wait until WWDC to see what other goodies Apple will release or show off.

Well I just finilized some payment issues in regarding to the billing and shipping addresses being different. I bought from the US store and currently I am in Canada (Ontario). So my billing was to CAN but shipping to the US (North Carolina) because my relative lives there. Well I bought the refurb'd 2.0Ghz MBP. $1699 US with 7% tax. I plan to pick it up when I drive down there, plan to vacation for about 10 days. I will post when I get back (beginning of Aug) to tell you all about the overall performance/looks and any defects/damages on the laptop. I will carry all of these items in my new Oakley Icon 2.0 bag 😀. Anyways, everything so far is okay, shipping on the 20th and recieveing well 5 business days later. Any questions, PM me.
