are you really straightedge? or referring to the front you put up as an RA?

in any case, that's cool that you're looking to change the face of frats at umass. my parents were both in service frats (well, my dad was in an rotc one), so i realize they're not ALL like that. and ultimately, my problem is with the idiots who get hammered constantly and date rape girls, not with the groups they associate themselves with. i do feel that frats don't do enough to discourage that aspect though.

because of this thread I think i know what a frat is now after years of not asking and googling. sounds like a club with silly names. i remember some film a while ago (the first and last american 'frat' film i saw) where some guy got into some frat and then his mate photographed something and ended up dead and there was all this corruption and stuff. at the end there was a gun fight thing.

in the UK we just spend our first year at university either in a small house/flat by yourself or with ~2-5 mates or in the halls of residence. where you make friends and then get a house together as the uni will probably kick you outta halls after the first year! at least that seems to be the norm here.

me? im living at home :p and its aaall good. can i start my own 'frat' i wonder? hmm. suppose im already a member of my family though.

what's funny is i'm an RA in the dorms right now. i get free housing, and get paid.

our fraternity probably wouldn't be able to get a house any time before I graduate. so I can stay where I am, and maintain my perfect image as the straight-edge RA, and then go hang out with the guys and chill on the weekends.

seriously, though. not all fraternities are about drinking or date rape. a lot of the ones here at umass are. hopefully, we'll change that image here.

The first thing you should do is change your name from Kappa Alpha Igloo Omega Zio Zio Sigma Delta, to something clever that no other frat house would expect. Like..like.. AMISH DEATHBOTS.

So there, now you have a new image of a frat, but that's not deep enough. Now you need to put pikes in te front yard, symbolizing the death of stereotypical frats. You then should never dawn white sheets cleverly tied onto your body. Instead, where kimono's or leather chaps. Cowboy hats are acceptable too.

So now you have the image down. What does your frat do for fun? Seriosly, you can't hold "parties" or you'll be just like every other frat. So what are you going to do.

If you truly change frats as I know them, Good on ya! I wish you the best in this endevour.

Sororities are popular too....try to find a girl whose a member of Delta Sigma Lambda, I hear they have great....smiles :D

I passed up the greek scene at my school, mostly because I realized it wasn't going to help me meet chicks (2 sororities on campus....damn engineering school) and therefore why do anything like that? I am not against them and I remain friends with everyone I was friends with before they joined a frat. The difference? They have mandatory meetings and events....mine are all optional.

Engineering schools suck. 21 fraternities here and 3 sororities.

I'm a sophomore at UMass/Amherst. I never thought I'd join a fraternity, mostly because the existing ones here all suck. But then, a few guys thought it was high time that UMass got a new fraternity. So they're trying to start a chapter of Pi Kappa Phi.

Earlier this week, I went to the information session, and decided I liked it, and so yesterday, I pledged!

Any Pi Kapps here? How did you like your experience?

Where is amherst, how far away is it from milton?

Pretty much, yeah. I am just planning on getting rich and finding an always-hot gold.digger gf to pretend love me for all eternity, ie until I die and she can steal my money. Oh well, some find love, others buy it....same end just different means I guess.

We don't have frats or anything like that here in Aus - although I have often tried to join I Felta Thigh, and succeeded on many ooccasions. It just seems that High School and Uni here are far more laid back (you'd be lucky to get 50 people to a university game of anything, we don't have big stadiums for unis, not even state teams get crowds as it seems you have to be in the top echelon of the sport to pull a crowd. I like it this way, it's all far more relaxed than what I've seen at unis in the states)

My college was once all male and Greek. The frats were well known for being very WASPy and exclusive. When the college when co-ed in the 70s, there was a lot of resistence to incorporate women into the traditions and culture. In 2000, we abolished the Greek system, upseting a lot of wealthy alums. As a whole, I think my college is better off because of it, but frats do bring traditions and a certain atmosphere to a school that is missed. Unfortunately, a lot of baggage comes with them as well.
