Reasonable speed and reliable internet was available no matter where you traveled to ? I know that will most likely never happen but maybe it will for like 70% of where you can go at least. That could be a little high or low.

My point is so you could stream media instead that way you didn't have to plan ahead on what you want to watch.

Even better is to do both! Win win situation.

You may still have to contend with geographic restrictions.

I remember going to the Philippines and Netflix was blocked unless I use VPN. Connection was super slow anyway so I just used my laptop with Plex server + 2TB HDD.

Now the streaming services have gotten smarter and some won't allow you to stream if you're connected to VPN.

So how much of the world percent wise do you all think has usable internet ?

I mean for 99.99% of my time outside the home I can already assume to have access to high speed internet. The only exception is certain flights doesn’t have internet so I just sync whatever I want to watch while at the gate either from my NAS or a streaming service.

I don’t really travel to developing countries at all and if I do the hotels I live at would most likely have decent internet regardless.

Either way I wouldn’t choose a bigger storage sized device because of the very low chance I’d go somewhere where internet access was questionable. I can bring a USB C SSD if I am going there.
 
For me the internet is still just too messy. Some areas are much better than others, but I still run into enough annoyances on a regular basis that I'd rather just keep everything local.

Not totally iPad related, but connection related -

Just before COVID I was at a coffee shop with a potential client and I wanted to pitch a song idea that I was working on in Logic, it had a bunch of tracks and it was something like 500 MB total. Boneheaded me forgot that I removed it from my local drive and just had it up on Splice (a "cloud" service). It was taking FOR. EVER. to load up, so I did a network speed test and the wifi network was congested so I only had a 1 Mb/s connection, which means we would have had to wait over an hour just to download the project!

I tried to create a hotspot on my phone but that was even worse. Also with security issues and such, I just don't like putting my trust in other people's networks if I can avoid it. It's really easy to spoof a WIFI connection.

This is definitely related to where you stay and your access of places for sure. If you’re in a big city you wouldn’t even think twice about it but if you’re in rural remote areas then there’s definitely a chance you getting connectivity issues. There’s no one fit all answer.

This is the reason why I always buy the cellular models

It has nothing to do with education. Rural areas often do not have adequate connectivity. Our camp doesn’t have electricity unless we run a generator. No WiFi, cell signal is adequate for AT&T, horrible for Verizon, and non-existent for T-Mobile.

Yeah, there are a lot of rural areas I get to that have poor - or no - connectivity, WiFi or cell. And as you say, it is not connected to education levels at all. And there are a lot of well-connected areas where people don't have the financial wherewithal to take advantage of it. It was really sad seeing pictures of kids gathered around hotspots in parking lots for remote schooling for whatever reason, be it circumstances of geography or finance.
 
This is all the target of 5G. Fast Internet that has almost ubiquitous coverage. So much so that you see even features like Apple is adding in iOS 15 where devices will prefer 5G over WiFi.

We shall see if this goal is ever hit.
