I had a HP TouchSmart laptop that worked beautifully software wise, much less trouble than OS X that I've had. If you know how to maintain a computer system, it really doesn't make much of a difference unless you screw it up.
The BIG problem with HP is their crappy quality control and their even worse support. Something wrong with your HP? Tough luck getting anything done quickly. You get a copy of Win7 loaded full of bloatware, shoddy battery life, trackpad, build quality, heat issues... these small things really get in the way of enjoying your purchase and the worst thing is that there's nothing you can do at home since the main problem is flaky hardware.
3 hour battery life (with extended batt pack), core temps of 70-90 deg??
I liked the build quality and battery life of my mac (10hrs for 2010 13 inch) so much that it made using a laptop actually enjoyable rather than a chore.
