With all the 6/9 core, the new keyboard, etc talks, seems the addition of True Tone is not getting much talk.

I got my 2018 15" a couple of days ago and I must say I absolutely LOVE True Tone on this beautiful 15" screen. I try to disable it a few times and I can notice a huge difference in my eye strain and overall how softer and nicer the screen feels with it.

I understand that this will not fit for graphic/video editors but for the rest of us this feature alone can be worth an upgrade to the 2018 model.

I also love it. And as for graphic/video editors, it's easy to just turn if off IF one is doing an activity that requires accurate screen calibration. For the rest of the time, as you note, it makes a huge difference in avoiding eye strain.

It's no surprise that it makes a big difference. D65 is supposed to represent noon daylight in mostly sunny conditions at mid to high (but not extreme) latitudes like Europe. But how many of us use our screens outside in the middle of the day and want them to replicate or match that light? D65 looks horribly wrong almost every time I disable some form of white point modification, be it True Tone or otherwise; unless I'm outside in broad daylight that is.

I don't think D65 makes any sense as the default for modern displays, but it's part of the sRGB standard I think so it just kind of stuck. Recently however the health effects of this "bright daylight" look, particularly during night-time use, has been questioned. To me, D55 makes more sense as a default, but that's still too blue for evening use, more like indoor daytime. Then again, if it's morning and you want to wake up maybe D65 is a good thing?

As for colour accuracy and grading, so long as you're using a consistent white point that isn't too extreme I think you should be able to work with that (so yes, not True Tone). It certainly doesn't have to be D65. But that's just my amateur opinion and what do I know? Some professional will surely come along and tell me it's wrong.

First I found it weird being on but now it is even weirder when I turn it off.

Didn't think I would appreciate it so quickly and, as it is easily toggled on or off, I think (admittedly belatedly) it is a brilliant addition to the MBP.

Not going to lie, I thought I wouldn't use True Tone at all BUT - having a Touch Bar shortcut to turn it on and off easily is CLUTCH. When I'm editing, I turn it off with a touch of the shortcut and vise versa.

I've been debating returning my MBP this week and waiting for the new Macbook/MBA. The #1 factor in favor of keeping it is True Tone. I did not expect to like it this much.

It's like flux for the daytime!
