She’s really not averse to change, just to spending money.
I really don't understand that position. She's okay to spend $1200+ on a new laptop, but isn't willing to spend another $40 on new cables (or hub, whatever)?

I thought my wife would be thrilled with the M2 MBA that I bought for her to replace her 2017 13" MBA.

I was wrong. She's a busy attorney and moving from the old machine to the new MBA has been a time consuming hassle that she would rather do without.

The main problem, as she sees it, is that the new machine doesn't have enough of the right kind of ports.

She mainly uses her old MBA at her office and our condo. Both places have monitors to which she connects using the old MBA's mini-DVI port, printers to which she connects via the MBA's USB-A port. She uses the other USB-A port for her Time Machine drive or an external USB keyboard.

She has Mag-Safe 2(?) chargers at both her office and the condo. The M2 came with one Mag-Safe 3(?), so she'll have to buy another.

She very much dislikes the idea of having to use a hub to connect her stuff. She'll either have to haul the hub around, or buy enough hubs to populate home, office and condo.

None of this would bother me. I'd accept it as an interesting challenge and would enjoy getting everything working right. Spending money doesn't bother me as much as it does her.

Of course, I'm retired and have nothing but time on my hands.

The upside is that I may end up replacing my kernel panic plagued 2017 iMac with the M2 MBA and, perhaps, a nice big display to go with it.

Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion.
sounds like she needs a 14 pro...

As someone who never prints anything I’m probably not qualified to comment, but I agree about wireless. The printer we have at home has WiFi. The one at her office is an inkjet that needs a cable. The one at the condo is an ancient Canon laser printer that also needs a cable.

I have on order all the cables and adapters I need to make this, hub or hub-less, as painless as possible.

I hesitate to predict the result.
doctors and lawyers print all the time!!!

Oh, wait. The best solution is an MBA for me!
Good thinking!

Apple's failure to release a MagSafe 2 to MagSafe 3 adapter will create tons of unnecessary e-waste. Going all USB-C has been a frustration point for years now. Most of us just buy adapters and move on, but it's annoying. I know this isn't a new argument but non-techies look at this stuff and get really annoyed by it.

Intel machines are great, with a lot of ports (for nowadays' standards) and few problems.
My 2013 MBA is so cool, I'm going to give it to my sister but it is a hard choice to me.

Tech should make life easier. If her old machine does everything she needs and makes her life easier, she’s right not wanting to change it. Both of you win in this occasion

Get a usb hard drive, connect it to the old machine, use it as a time machine, back up and restore to the new machine

I have initiated a return with Apple. They’ll pick it up next week. I decided not to keep it as I’m not much of a laptop fan. I’ve never bought one for myself, just used hand-me-downs.

Bye bye little MBA.

attorneys and these in the legal field don't need the newest and greatest, most of the work is documentation and sites like westlaw or lexis for research. i'm a exception cause i like new apple stuff, but my supervisor, he is perfectly fine with his 2014 mac mini with a 1440p display.
Don’t most attorneys use WordPerfect?

Just get her the three hubs and call it a day, you can find them on Amazon or eBay on the cheaper side. I would also look at getting a wireless printer. What type of law does she practice?
We live in Thailand. She’s Thai. She practices civil law; mostly procedural stuff. Most of her clients are foreigners living in Thailand.

I’d like USB-A, DVI, and VGA ports to diminish from earth in the next 5 years
I hate them
I work in a scientific lab. We use serial, GPIB, and 7-pin (!!!) cables regularly. If its not broken we don’t touch it…sometimes for 20+ years. We still run one 486 machine every day.

but they definitely benefit from an all-day battery life, which sounds like something the OP’s wife could use when going from office to home to condo.

heck, depending on usage patterns, she might not need the extra magsafe chargers as a single charge every two days might do, as does the fact that you have usb-“ c charging as a fallback.

Thats great. How do you like living in Thailand? I assume business is booming with expats. In the states we use Westlaw, Lexus. How good is amazon or its equivalent in Thailand, since that might make getting the hub more challenging. The main advantages of a new laptop will be the ability to keep multiple tabs open, which helps when dealing with complex issues.
