I have a MacBook Pro and a 5th gen 12.9 iPad and would like a hub that would work with both if possible. Amazon is flooded with generic hubs for cheap but not sure if they are all pretty much h the same and most of all I want them to be safe.
I prefer a solution which uses a cable to connect to the iPad: this one from Anker; this; the cheapest one I own is this one - it gets really hot when connected to a device though. To be clear: all hubs do depending on what you connect. Depending on the MBP model you might extend the feature set to include ethernet too?

I would recommend Anker USB-C Hub. The reviews are good and it’s got all the portals you need, sd, micro sd, hdmi and usc a. It also connects your MacPro and iPad with one hub. It’s on sale on Amazon but still costs 70 bucks. You could try some deal finders maybe? Honey, Retailmenot, CouponBirds, things like that help a lot on saving.
I have had a good experience with the Novoo 8 in 1 USB-C Hub. The 8 in 1 has an SD/Micro SD card reader, TF card slot, 3 USB-A ports, gigabit Ethernet port, USB-C PD port, 4k @30 Hz HDMI output. I have had this hub for over a year now. There are smaller ones as well that they make too if eight ports are too many.

I bought a Thunderbolt version. OWC Thunderbolt Hub. Since your Mac and iPad have it, it will allow you to expand easily. If you want all the little bits like 12-in-1 USBC, checkout Hyper on Kickstarter. They have a version one that worked well but their new version is Thunderbolt or USB C.
