"I need a good American Bank" That's almost a contradiction in terms these days.

I'm happy with HSBC (not an American Bank, but has branches by me in the U.S.) and have been happy with TD Bank as well. Both are honest and fair about when they post deposits and withdrawls.

Bank of America should have been allowed to fail during the crisis and their depositors paid by the FDIC. I'll never do business with a bank guilty of such crimes--and it doesn't surprise me at all that they are mistreating their customers.

If you don't have HSBC or TD bank by you I'm sure another big regional bank would be a good bet. So what if they aren't national? I can't think of a single American national bank that's decent.

A vote against Wells Fargo -- they love their fees!

A vote for credit unions, but beware, some of them are for profit and barely different from "normal" banks. Find something that has a restrictive membership (which you can join) and pay attention to their fees and interest rates.

Another vote for USAA. If you qualify (any family member in military, however they may have changed the rules) than they are excellent. Best customer service and if there is ever any problem they will fix it. Especially with their deposit@home and deposit@mobile, it makes it super easy to deposit checks.
