Out of over 57000 responses, overall 20% of all laptops required repairs.

Just out of interest, how many of you have needed a laptop repair? I've had three laptops in the last 4 years. My acer went back and got switched for a new one on two ocassions, my iBook had the graphics problem and has been repaired half a dozen times and my powerbook has warped and had it's casing replaced!

String of bad luck?

All of the engineers that I work with were recently outfitted with the newest version of the HP nc8000 business notebook. I must say for a win system, these things are really really nice. The screens are quite easy on the eyes, very clean and clear. The version that most of them have (for use of Pro/E and other CAD systems, Pro mostly though) has a 128mb ATI 9600 Pro graphics card and maxed ram. Needless to say, these things are quite responsive, even when using Pro/E which is a very intensive program. I do not know a lot about wintops, however HP has really impressed me with their business line (however their home user line has done nothing but disappoint).

if price is no object, alienware puts very nice components into their systems, once you get past the extremely lame exterior.

Been there, done that; Alienware sucks.

Go Averatec. They aren't a huge company, but they make really good laptops for your price range. I bought my wife one and she loves it. I'm glad I bought it to, becuase I have to use it now, becuase MY Alienware died. 😡

My fathers company is buying him a new laptop and he needs help deciding on which one to get.
If the five thousand previous recommendations for the ThinkPad weren't enough, here's another one. I am a happy PowerBook user now, but if I were going to buy a Windows notebook today it would be a ThinkPad, no question.

The only Alienware I have seen that impressed me performance-wise was a desktop unit that was well over $3k (which most any computer could be stellar at that pricepoint).

My roommate recently purchased an Averatec 12.1" notebook (I think from BB) and he loves it. It was a great price, good performance for what he needs, built in wifi and some other decent features for quite cheap. I think it used the AMD Athlon-M chip....which notebook wise you might be opposed to due to power consumption (I love them for desktops however, cheap and fast).

Anyway, just wanted to second the Avertec for a cost effective 'working' laptop. An IBM Thinkpad would rock also, but it would be much more expensive....so there is your major choice.
