Hello.

I’ve been using the iPhone 6 since launch, on contract, and my mom has been using her 5c since launch, also on contract. We share the same account and our monthly bill is around $88/month. This is on Verizon.

I’ve never purchased a phone without a contract/subsidy, and I don’t understand how the math works now that contracts don’t exist.

Can anyone here tell me what we might pay per month if I were to upgrade to the X? Even if there are multiple answers based on multiple options, your help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

If you are buying the iPhone X contract free, then your monthly bill should remain around $88 per month. By now your both contracts have expired. The Carrier's don't discount your monthly bill if you bring your own new iPhone.

You aren't on contract any longer.

What plan are you on? I need you to log into the Verizon account and tell me the name of the plan you are on.

Please tell me the name of the plan you are on and then I can help you. Verizon is having a trade in deal and you would get $200 for your iPhone 6 and your mother would get $100 for her iPhone 5c but that is only if they don't have cracked screens and work and don't have cracks in the housing.

Do you get an employer discount or military or veterans discount?

I’m currently on the 2 GB S plan. Only I would be upgrading my phone the the X. My mom will stay on her 5c. My 6 has no cracks or scratches in the glass. The back is clean. There are a couple minor gouges on the edges.

I don’t get any discounts from work or military.

If you are on the New Verizon Plan 2GB Small plan, then that should be $35 for the data and $20/mo for each smartphone line, so $75/mo before taxes and fees. I assume that Safety Mode is enabled so that you don't end up with any data overages. Check to make sure.

That's a lot of money to pay each month for basically 1 GB of data per line. You all are likely better off on a prepaid or MVNO plan since you hardly use any data.

For instance, you could be on a Verizon Prepaid family plan and each of you could have 3GB of data and that would be $40 for the first line and $30 for the next line and you don't get all of those fees tacked on, just sales tax and E911 fees if any so it would be more like $75/mo for 2 lines to have 3GB each. But you can't finance phones on prepaid.

What I would do is pre-order the iPX from Apple through the AiUP, which includes AC+. Then trade in your iPhone 6 to Apple for an Apple gift card.

Then I would look to move to prepaid or a Verizon MVNO once you get the iPhone X.

If you insist on staying on that ridiculously overpiced 2GB plan, you can pre-order through Verizon online - do not do the trade in online though. After you get your iPhone X, take your iPhone 6 to a Verizon corporate store and have them inspect it and tell you if they are going to give you the $200 TIV for it. If so, you can trade it into Verizon at the Verizon corporate store.

Make sure you know the difference between a Verizon corporate store and an authorized retailer. And don't do the pre-order in store, do it online and then once you get the iPhone X, you can take the iPhone 6 to a Verizon corporate store to do the trade in.

Also the $200 TIV is paid out in 24 monthly bill credits so you are stuck with Verizon for 2 years and stuck with the iPX for 2 years.

Thanks for your help.
Just to be clear, if you are currently paying $88/mo for your Verizon phone bill, if you pre-order a 64GB iPX through Verizon for $1000, you will pay the sales tax on $1000 at the time you pre- order, so about $60-$80 depending on your sales tax rate. I don't know if the upgrade fee will be waived or not for online pre-orders, but if it isn't waived, you will also pay the $30 upgrade fee with the sales tax.

Then each month Verizon will bill you 1/24th of $1000 = $41.67 for the iPX payment. If you trade in your iPhone 6 for $200, you will receive a bill credit each month of 1/24th of $200 = $8.33. So that means your bill will increase by:

$41.67 - $8.33 = $33.34 for the iPhone X.

The trade in bill credits will take 2-3 months to show up on your bill but when they do, you will get any missed bill credits so that you get the full 24 bill credits.

Please know that if you pay off your iPhone X early or take advantage of the iPhone Upgrade Program after paying 12 payments, you will forfeit any remaining bill credits for your iPhone 6 trade in. Also if you leave Verizon postpaid before the iPhone X is fully paid off, you will owe the remaining balance due for the iPhone X and you will forfeit any remaining bill credits.

Thanks. This all makes sense to me now.
