I've got an Iomega ego 500GB external with firewire 800. I would recommend it just cause its much faster than any of my usb 2.0 drives. Who dosent love speed. You can transfer all your really long movies super fast.

I'm planning to purchase one of these SuperTalent SuperCrypt 256GB USB 3.0 thumb drives for my HP envy. Not for...ahem porn, of course, but for my "taxes."

However, it's probably fast enough that I'm wondering if I should make it bootable or use it to run programs or Hackintosh if my main drive starts to fill up.

The "SuperCrypt Pro" version apparently uses 256-bit XTS encryption. The drawback would seem to be that it looks like it's so wide that it will block any USB ports next door.

I just had to have a post in this thread!

As far as random unrequired TMIness goes, this dude takes the cake.

As for my actual reply, people might flame me for saying this but I've always used Seagate and Kingston and never had issues with them. They make some really cheap 1TB drives. :)

Ahem... is there no way I can password protect a folder and its sub-folders? I don't need encryption per se, just a way of keeping innocent eyes away from the 'sport'.

All questions are purely hypothetical...

The MBP I ordered only has the 320GB hard drive. I have more porn than that so an external is definitely needed. Plus my girlfriend will be using the MBP and I'm positive she will somehow find the folder - she's curious by nature.

All kidding aside, moving your porn to an external HD or NAS device is only part of the solution. You'll also need to be very sure you learn how to clear the "Open Recent" lists in Quicktime, VLC, Preview or whatever media player you use.

Otherwise, she'll have questions about that file named "Tug.On.My.Toes.Part1.avi" in your recently viewed list. She may not be able to see it, but Google knows all.

I've been looking at external HDs for back ups recently. I'm trying to decide if I want to spend more for the FW800 connection. Seems to cost a lot more.

Why not? It'll save you so much time. MUCH quicker and more consistent read/write speeds. When I get my MBP i'm definitely getting a FireWire 800 External hard drive.

Tip: Name the resultant .dmg something non-suspicious like "planes.dmg", or "cars.dmg" - something she wouldn't be interested in anyway!
Excellent pro tip.

My family bought a 1TB WD MyBook a couple of years ago. Besides not actually being 1TB (more like 930GB) it has worked great. WD would seem to be the best option in your case.

Yes that's what I do. Something women will say " Yeck" to. Something like 'Model train sets', or Chuck Norris; something like that.

For all those coming now at this thread...

A WD hdd and truecrypt. You can name the truecrypt files any name you like...

Tug on my toes doesn't sound like porn at all unless someone is doing it wrong.

On a side note, updated for (late) 2011, Thunderbolt drive is the only way to go! =)

yeah I've gone all streaming and I feel a little bit more secure in that. I mean, interested parties can find out of course, but it isn't nearly as obvious to the gf. I feel what some people are saying about honesty and whatnot. We can watch some things together. She is cool with that. But some things should stay between me and my iMac ;)

glad to see MacRumors, as a community, opening up like this :D
+1. Google chrome -> incognito window, ready to go! ofc you must have internet access, but then again... you won't watch p0rn on a plane or on the road, right? right?

They all have it - Safari and FF both have Private Browsing modes.

I stopped keeping stuff locally and went the streaming/private browsing route. But back when i still did i created a 256-AES passworded encrypted image of a folder using DiskUtil, named it something random and threw it in a hidden rarely used part of the filesystem.

As for external...WD Passport is a good one.

Perhaps you should consider getting rid of either the collection or the girlfriend - surely one makes the other redundant?

As for the topic .... there is a 1 Tb iOmega FW 800 portable "BlackBelt Mac Ed." drive for sale locally. $150. Can anyone give any pro's/con's re: this drive?

Is FW more hassle that the cost makes it worth? I read somewhere that the FW connector in the MBP can be a bit of a liability.

I keep my 'racy' stuff in disk images with PW, not that my wife really gives a damn about what's on my computer. (Tho having it looked over by cops if lost or super-vigilent immigration goons might make me red-faced.)

OWC sells great HDs.

(By the way, you might consider the possibility of enhancing your pleasure by sharing your porno w/ GF :D)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Get rid of her. Why should your girlfriend mind you having porn. Also, I consider my computer to be a private area - an area a girlfriend has to respect. For me an absolute no go and none of my girlfriends would have come to the idea exploring my computer. Same applies for phones etc. I don't know if you are familiar with the concept of trust

Get a My Passport Studio drive - connect via FireWire 800 for a fast speed. That way you wont get any buffering issues when you get to the money shot!
lol

You can rename the folder to a name that starts with a dot, those files are normally not shown via Finder. You will need the terminal to re-name it back afterwards. Be straight with her and tell her, she may not be that curous afterwards :p
