I have an external drive that is the same size as the internal drive in my mbp. I have bootcamp partition. How do I back up both partitions onto my external drive?

I would start by partitioning the backup drive the same way you partitioned your mac's drive...but that's just me.

Well I figured I would have to do that. But could you tell me or post a link for the steps to do this and then how i would go about backing up osx (probably time machine?) and then my windows partition. Thanks.

Look up carbon copy cloner or SuperDuper to make an image of the OSx portion of the drive. there's also a program to copy the windows partition.
