i think a pre-owned honda civic would suit you well. it's very reliable, efficient and requires low-maintenance. also, civic's handling is nimbler than most of its competitors.

edmunds.com 2006 used car best bet

Yeah, edmunds is a good bet, as is consumer reports.

If you need more room, look at the civic hatchback, not the coupe or sedan.

Also, I just did a quick look at autotrader.com and found about 150 Honda CR-Vs and Subaru Foresters for 6-10k, plus at least one Element in there as well.

The Subaru would get you decent mileage and still have some room in it.

That sounds low - be sure to find out whether it's been in an accident.

Over here, you can usually pick up low mileage, bargin Honda's just after a severe cold snap in winter, because that's when the majority of the old folk owners pop their clogs. heh.

I'm only 5' 7". My friend who is a bit taller than you (6' 5") drives a Cobalt Sedan and he fits just fine. The Cobalt Coupe probably has a lot less headroom I would assume, especially in the back seats. If you are driving the car I'd recommend lowering the seat which should give you more head room.

sit all the way done and my head rub the roof plan and simple. Trust me when I get in my sister car I do adjust the sit the best I can I am not stupid.

The Cobalt is just a small car and was not designed for 6 footers. It was poorly done for the larger population which is rather said for an American car company.
There just are more comfortable cars for 6 footers in the same price range. A sentra is one of them. It has a lot more room for the driver. More horizontal room.

Also I might like to add my upper body is more than likely taller than your friend. more than likely a little longer than the average 6'5" person. My Dad avoids my sister car like crazy but he is also 6'6" and like me neither one of us really fit in that car. My brother who is my height fits ok in it (his u;per body is shorter than mine) and he still calls it really cramped.

do not get me wrong I think the cobalt is a fine car. Just if you are a 6 footer it not is NOT good car to choose. My sister loves her cobalt and it is a good car. Just it is 2 small for larger people. The reason my brother did not get one when he was picking out the cars was because he though it was 2 small.

I'd steer clear of the older cars (unless you have automotive experience and can fix things yourself). Older cars tend to start giving problems as the mileage increases, and from my experience, that's just the beginning of the trouble. Keep in mind that german and japanese cars might be harder to find parts for too... but they retain their value better than american made cars (whose parts are usually readily available).

you should be able to get a 2000-2002 honda civic dx / dx-g for less than 10k. they're pretty reliable cars.
