iPhone 11 Pro I need help.

My head is spinning on this one.
When my phone is sleeping I do not get alerts when an iMessage or text comes in, just on my watch. Now if I’m downstairs and I don’t have my watch on this does me no good. How do I get alerted on both? Orrrr how do I make it that my phone gets the alert first and not my watch.
what am I doing wrong?

If you're wearing your Watch, by default, the notification comes through on the Watch. The phone doesn't light up, vibrate, etc (unless it's a phone call).

If you're not wearing your Watch, your phone will notify you as normal.

My understanding is if you have your watch and the phone and you are wearing the watch, you get the notifications on your watch and not on your phone. I think if you go to the Watch App settings, you can go to the Messages and change some settings there.

Also if you are not wearing your watch, your phone should know that.

The bottom side of the watch detects your wrist. When you take your watch off it will lock, requiring you to enter your 4 digit code to unlock. Your watch is paired to the iPhone, so the iPhone knows when the watch is off your wrist.

The notifications still go to your phone, they're just silent and do not illuminate the screen. If you go into the Notification Center on your phone, the notifications will be there.

I can’t tell you for certain why Apple chose to do it that way, but my guess is that they believed it would be confusing and annoying getting the same notification on both devices. Keep in mind that the timing of the notifications won’t always be the same, so your watch could give you the same text notification that you just got a few seconds ago on your phone.

That’s correct. The only time it wouldn’t do this is if you had your watch on and was using your phone actively browsing a app or something. In this instance the notification would come up on the iPhone.

It's to prevent you from getting multiple notifications for the same event on multiple devices. ie. So you're phone and watch don't start beeping and buzzing at the same time which, admittedly, would be maddening.

That's one smart watch. I didn't know this.
