I currently have an iPad 2 32 gb. It's been having some major issues lately. The home button only works sporadically and the power button is no longer working. If it's asleep, I have to hold the power button down for the slide to power off screen. The rocker bar for the volume doesn't work. I'm thinking it's time to replace it. I'm getting ready to start UCLA Extension classes and it requires an iPad, so I have to have one. Unfortunately, money is a big, big problem right now, so I'm looking on eBay to get a replacement. I just can't afford even Apple's refurbished ones at this point. I can't qualify for credit right now either so I can't just sign up for a Best Buy card or anything. There's that Presta website which is basically a rent to own but you know their markup is going to be ridiculous plus they only have the 16gb versions of the iPad 2, the 4, and the Mini. Any suggestions here on which way to go? From what I've read, the 3 shouldn't really be an option. I also don't think I really need a 3G model so I'm looking at WiFi only. Thoughts?

Apples out of warranty service repair is $249 in the US.

Based on that, you'd probably be better off buying a 4th gen refurbished and then selling your old iPad as is. Someone will buy it for parts.

iPad 4, ask your mom, dad, or other family member. You are taking college classes.

Refurbs are a good deal. if its still a no go, as far as your home button goes, place your five fingers on the screen and bring them together to get to the home screen, and a four finger swipe up (anytime) brings up the task bar, single finger swipe right on the task bar brings up your mute, volume, brightness, and audio player controls.

Have you tried restoring it back to factory configuration to see if the issues persist?

If they do, can you enable multi-touch gestures on the iPad2? If so, this largely removes the need for a home button.

It also sounds like the power button is going from what the perosn said. I think hardware replacement is the way to go.

While I agree that hardware replacement is the best, I don't think he's having hardware problems with the power button. He can hold it down and get the slide to power off. A device reset might fix that. Also we don't know if they are running the latest version of iOS.

Buy such a thing, too. Your luck with mechanical buttons is obviously limited.
