It felt like an essential accessory purchase for my iPad Pro back in the day, so got one without hesitation. I even changed my mind and returned it, but ended up buying another one later on.

Oddly, it still feels essential-- even though I never use it more than a minute or two each year--as if someday I will be grateful I have it for some unforeseen task.

I watched the 2020 WWDC keynote with cautious optimism. Maybe this will be the year I need to keep it charged?

Same here. I rarely use it other than as a stylus if my fingers are dirty but I keep it nearby. I have essential tremors so I have found it's not really useful to me as a writing instrument.

I use my pencil nearly everytime when I use my iPad Pro. Making notes. Correcting documents. Me in the sofa, IPP on the lap (with smart folio keyboard) - easier to tap the screen with the pencil than with the fingers.

You are not the only one. I used mine a lot more when I was in college taking notes, and almost never use it now. Despite that I feel compelled to buy one and keep it charged / accessible.

It's an amazing stylus, to be sure and definitely an essential iPad accessory... for some, but I find myself barely using it. Don't really do any photo editing, graphic design, note taking, and have only played around with it a couple of times. I can see this being an indispensable peripheral for a lot of consumers, but I'm just not one of them.

I had a gen 1 pencil with my previous iPad. I now have a new ipad but decided to skip the pencil. I was tempted to buy one also to just have it around but haven’t missed it especially with the magic keyboard.

The same problem here, never use it but need to have it 😀 But the question what I always ask myself is: Shall I keep it connected or leave it in closet without charging?
Sometimes I took it to the work but everytime I realize that I need to remove it to be able to handle iPad in hands or it interfere in my bag.
But if I do not take it, I feel that I am missing something 😀

I have older 10" iPad Pro where you can't magnetically attach the pen yet and find it infuriating that I never have the pen handy on those rare times when needed. Any good solutions for attaching it to older iPad Pros? I have Smart Keyboard cover already so I wouldn't necessary want to add any new case with pencil holder...

I felt I needed to have one but knew I wouldn’t use it all that much. Im not an artist so don’t need the pressure sensitivity. So I thought of getting the Logitech crayon but that is still fairly expensive for something I’ll only use maybe a handful of times a month at most.

Ended up getting a stylus from AliExpress in China, it‘s made for the iPad and works like the Crayon, looks more like the pencil.

if anyone is interested (no affiliation etc etc etc):

Use it every day to underline papers and to write notes during roundward. Something that I really appreciate. I hope that in the future I will learn to draw anatomical sketches on paper 53 😅

Wow..thanks for the info! Never thought about knock offs. Does it show up as Apple Pencil 2 (or something else) on the iPad?

I'm wondering if the iOS 14 additional Apple Pencil feature will work with this (and Logitech Crayon)? Time to go do some research!

But thanks for the link!

Edit: From Reddit, looks like the Scribble feature works with Logitech Crayons and other Apple Pencil clones.

I go through spurts of time where I don't use the Pencil much, but then there are other spurts of time where I need it every day. I use it for all my photo/video/audio editing as well as all my Affinity Designer and Procreate projects, but I'm not always working in those kinds of projects every single day.

The thing is though, it's a great tool to have handy even if I don't have a big project going. I've lost count of how many times I've needed to fill out and return a form quickly and was so glad I had the Pencil handy, or when I needed to take a quick screenshot and mark it up for someone.

I could not go without my Pencil at this point--there are work flows I've gotten used to that just simply require it. For example, I never want to edit a photo or video without it ever again. That's just a more natural way for me to do a lot of different kinds of projects.

This is what helped push me to the iPad Pro 11 2018. I was sick and tired of carrying my Apple Pencil 1 in a pencil case wherever I went with my iPad. Now my pencil sits on my iPad all the time and is readily available whenever I need it (which is almost always last minute).

In fact, I have 2 pencils... one at work, one at home (though now, both are at home because of the virus) because of ready availability. When the boss calls, I have Notability out with my pencil to jot down all the stuff I need to remember to do!

Like a Logitech Crayon you don’t need to pair it, just turn it on and write away. I’ve bought two so far and the newer version I got last week also has a magnet so it can sit on top of my iPad Pro 2020. You still need to charge it via USB-C though, maybe in the next version they’ll figure out how to get it to charge wirelessly via the iPad.

And yes scribble does work with it, tested it on the iPadOS 14 beta.

I don't use mine that often, but have been playing with doing more note taking by hand. Feels like I am back in grad school and really does make it easier to remember and recall information.
