After updating my AirPort Express, I found my old active subwoofer today that used to belong to my home theater and connected it to the router via RCA to 3.5mm adaptor, then I connected that to my stereo pair of HomePods, and it worked!!!

No delay or problems. I’ll be honest though it’s a bit overkill, but I love it. Only reason I won’t keep it around is because it literally shakes my room.

Here’s a video (unfortunately you can hear much of the bass): https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeKit/co...bwoofer_to_my_stereo/?st=JLFO9HDE&sh=1321afbf

I'm confused what you mean by pairing the sub to your home pods. Looks like you've connected it to an airport extreme and are airplaying to it like any other speaker.
