The whole things a lottery, some video's can be remuxed, some can't; some play in iTunes, some don't, some play in avplayer; some don't. Some videos have perfect voice sync, some don't

the whole video playing experience is a PITA unless you download them through iTunes

Please read my posts on MPEG-2 HD DVB playback at https://discussions.apple.com/message/18466823?ac_cid=tw123456#18466823 (particularly the one dated at May 23, 2012 3:05 PM) , I've even listed players that are better at playing this kind of content back. (Will later publish a complete article on this subject with a guide to deinterlacing.)

You might still want to give a try to something better as RushPlayer has very annoying pauses: either It's Playing or BUZZ Player (read http://www.iphonelife.com/blog/87/g...release-hardware-mkv-video-player-powerplayer , also following the links to the reviews of these two apps; these articles explain all the little secrets you need to know of these apps). And, of course, you might want to consider remuxing on your desktop with Subler.

I use iFlicks which is the same as subler  Some videos come out ok but others are crippled, Lord of the rings was the worst stuttering and voice out of sync etc..in fact out of 20 videos only Anchorman came out ok, TV Shows Game of Thrones was flawless

Will try the other video players but, this is an other thing that pisses me off about apple/apps - no limited trial

They're completely different products.

With Subler, I had no problems converting the three LOTR episodes. Will test the same videos with iFlicks and report back.

Yup, unfortunately, it's exactly the most recommended apps that don't have a trial while less recommended ones (e.g., Oplayer) do have.

I thought they were the same (just remuxed videos) - Will download subler and try a few

As said iFlicks did Game of Thrones brilliantly, if subler can do the same i'll be happy as the native video player is much better than av

A vote against AcePlayer. It doesn't have any HW acceleration for MKV playback, unlike with the titles I've recommended and is, otherwise, a pretty average player. That is, it won't play back decent-bitrate (around 10 Mbps) Full HD MKV videos at all.

on your recommendation I tried the Its Playing app. I found it sucked a giant pile of monkey balls with my HD MKV files, stuttered all the time or the app just crashed altogether. Also its advertised network streaming functionality didn't function at all.

I know I'll probably get soundly mocked for suggesting this, but this is my first post, so I don't know better.

I use AirVideo. You install a small server on your PC or Mac and it can live convert just about any format (although I've personally only tried MKV's up to 720) and streams them to your iOS device. On a local network the picture and sound look pretty much perfect, remote streaming can be just as good, or degrade a bit if the remote connection is a lower connection speed.

I've been very happy with the app, and since jumping to an 802.11n network, I've had no problems with it at all.

don t know if you have tried it : buzz player.
plays 1080p videos (mp4, ...) on my ipad3 in HQ.
so far only one of these videos i tried did not work, many others have. :)
