So, I currently have the iPhone X and I pre-ordered the XS but now I'm thinking I should've just gotten the XS Max. I am REALLY conflicted now. My XS is expected to be here Friday so I'm thinking I should just return it to the store and order an XS Max. I would like to feel like I got a "new" phone by having the bigger screen but I just don't want to wait, or order new cases/screen protectors. I obviously know this is ultimately MY choice but I just want some opinions. Thanks!

It sounds like you know what you want to do already. It might take you longer to get the XS Max now, but better that than keeping the XS and regretting it all year.

I’m going X to Xs but it was an easy decision for me. I never cared for the plus size phones. I would get the size you want as opposed to getting the max just to feel like it’s a new phone.

I keep second guessing my pre-order too. If the Xr had OLED, it would have been an easier choice for me. I’m glad I didn’t have to decide between a white or black bezel this year.

I’m guessing the Max will be in stores on Friday. If you are near one, check it out and have your pre-order on hand to return.

Currently have the X, and getting the Xs Max, I didn't see the point of having another X when a bigger screen version is available and more appealing to me.

I ordered the Xs Max, and I have the X! I used Plus model phones since their introduction, so the X took some getting used to with the reduced useable area, narrower width, and especially the poor landscape and video display areas (and the huge black borders with all video). Aside from those shortcomings, I really did like the size of the phone. But I miss a larger screen -- so I'll see how I feel when the Xs Max arrives, whether it feels too large and/or uncomfortable in pockets and in use. We have like 14 days to return/exchange the phones, right?

If it helps I got the x and regretted it a bit. Regret it even. It's now that the max is out because that's what I really wanted (last year). Can't justify the expense so... here I am.

Most stores around me still have in store
Pickup on the xs on launch day. Socreturning it I don't think you'll have to regret much... you can probably just walk in and get another should you decide to stay with.

I preordered the XS for myself (coming from the X) and the XS Max for my husband. When his case arrived on Monday and I held it in my hand, I went back in and preordered an XS Max on our son’s line so I can make the decision on Friday and return the phone I don’t choose. I have a feeling the Max will be what I end up with, but I just wanted to be prepared! My son can have his upgrade back once I’ve figured it out

That's exactly how I felt last year...I really wanted a Plus sized X. And I told myself that I would wait at least another year before moving on to the new 'Max' X(s).

But, I choose not to wait. I paid off half of my 'old' X, so I'll be returning that to Verizon and starting a new purchase (2-year) of the Max. All in all, I spent $622.50 (50% of full price with NY tax) to own the best-in-class phone for one year.

You may argue semantics (since to fully 'own' the phone I would have needed to pay off the loan balance of the same amount so that I could sell it for around the same price). Since even the 256GB X used models in 'mint' condition have dropped to between $750-$815 in sales over the past few days. Sure, if I paid Verizon the balance, I could then turn around and sell my phone to make maybe $125 after fees, shipping, and insurance costs and further reduce my one-year cost of ownership. But that would take time, haggling, and always the concern, will this one be the buyer that tries to burn me and claim I shipped them the equivalent of a box of rocks instead of a mint phone! It has never happened to me, but it does happen to people. All in all, I receive a generally similar benefit as if I had bought and sold the model after one year. It just costs me a smaller amount more in $, but less in time and concern.

I digress! This phone I will keep for 2 years (at least), unless I exchange it for the more diminutive Xs model. But, I think I will be happy with it!

I think because it will be just like having the X it will be disappointing for you. However, as others stated you can check with some local stores and I am sure they will likely have some Max models in stock. I was at an AT&T store today (don't know who your carrier is) but the manager was telling me they really wasn't expecting to get many in. He said they usually get them on Thursday afternoon, but aren't allowed to sell them till they open on Friday.

Enjoy! It's a nice phone!
My X is probably destined to my wife in a years time unless she decides she wants a newer model. She was in the fence in the xs but ultimately decided against since our monthly fees would increase. But I may not want to upgrade then either; right now I'd rather upgrade the watch honestly, and I have an s3 so I stepped back.

Money is a big part of it but phones seem to just last longer now. The 6s and SE I mentioned run very well and saw performance increases (as did my X actually). Five years ago it was unheard of to have a three year old iPhone "running like new". I do appreciate that in many ways thiguh because, while costs have gone up, so has longevity, I feel.

Already eager to see what Apple brings to the table next year and this phone hasn't even launched yet lol.

Thanks for all of the feedback guys! I'm thinking I'm just gonna go ahead and return Friday night or Saturday morning since I work all day. I doubt I will be able to swap it out in stores which sucks.

I'm pretty sure you'll not be able to swap it out, the demand for the max I'm sure is high and the place will be crushing no doubt.

That's the part I hate. Gonna have to order new screen protectors and cases AND wait on another phone to be shipped. I know I will live but I just get really excited.

I’m going from the 8 Plus to the Max, but I also looked up clear cases and screen protectors and found a site that had them to ship already. Rec’d them 2 days ago in the mail so I’m set to put them on the phone the instant it arrives tomorrow. I went with a case and cover by by Totallee if anyone is interested...

For me the Xs Max is not even a consideration, my hands are way too small for that phone ― saves me money in the process

See my hands are small too lol.l I just think when I get the phone I have to see how I feel.

Understandable. I ALSO thought you would save some money perhaps with existing X cases - it was reported last week they would work, but no...they are slightly different. Stinks for X users.

Like many said, Get the XS, don't even open it, or activate it. If you have an Apple store nearby (or wherever the phone is coming from - ATT, Verizon, Best Buy, etc) , go in tomorrow or maybe even Saturday/Sunday (despite how insane it might me, swap it up for the XS Plus.) OR just get a refund, then order what device you want. The 14 days no questions asked refund policy is a good thing. And buyers regret is without question a very bad, painful feeling! :)

Wait a minute... the X cases won't for the XS?

I also have an X and pre-ordered Xs Max. I figured... I want to feel like I'm getting a new phone, and I wanted the bigger screen. I used Plus phones for 3 years before X came out and although a bit annoying to carry around, I handled it fine...

Actually I wasn't planning on upgrading at all but my husband who had a 7 Plus wanted to use my X... so I thought I might as well upgrade to Xs Max.. if I got Xs I wouldn't feel like I got much of an upgrade, maybe just a color change (since I'm getting gold color)
