I've always been hesitant to upgrade hDD myself, because I assume apple voids the warranty.
For the MacBook Pro, yes, it does.

Apple considers the MacBook's hard drive a "user-replaceable" part and so upgrading a MacBook's hard drive doesn't void the warranty. Unfortunately, the same policy doesn't hold for the MacBook Pro. :(
