every time I open my ios devices I get reminded of the annoyance of the missing slide to unlock.

3 ios devices with 3 different home buttons. I really hate the press to open. also it keeps tipping over my ipads with apple covers when pressing.
Also when things go fast I still end up in panic... just pressing the button again and again.
dont understand why users were not given a choice between how to open. In stead I end up in fast message and widget menues... that I rarely use anyway... especially on ipad

You can still use this workaround but only for devices with a TouchID feature so iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad mini3 and up and iPhone 5s and up. I know it's not the same thing but it comes close but is limited to amount of devices that can do this.

I really like and use the widgets a lot though as well.

I think it is a stupid UX choice for devices without Raise to Wake or Touch ID 2, but on the 6s with "Rest Finger to Open" and "Raise to Wake" I don't even have to press a button anymore :)

also my finger prints often get scared... have filled every fingerprint slot some fingers even 2 times... it does not work on me.

It bothered me a lot when it was first changed. I still wish they'd at least let it be a toggle in the settings even if it was off by default. But I've adjusted and have even gotten used to the swipe to reveal my widgets. Not a big deal to me anymore.

I don't really miss it because I use Touch ID long enough (2 years). Slide to unlock sometimes acts worse one-handed when you really want to unlock the device if the device is without Touch ID.

How would you scan your fingerprint? Pressing the scanner to unlock is the shortest way possible to get into the device no?
My friend who's still in 9.3.5 started using slide to unlock , he doesnt want to give it up. I'm still skeptic on this tho, i really just miss the old layout on music app,

I realized apple devices are more "work-oriented". But at least letting us choose which os to use (even ending support after 5-6 years is good for me, just give us the damn choice to do so) and not shoving those choice like a nazi party. Been an apple user since 3g era, really loved how apple's environment. I had iphone 4 still in ios 4 and apple not shoving to your throat updates is the best era.

Is there a way to use touch ID, without first pressing down on the home button?

You could go to Accessibility under General in Settings. Under Home Button, you can enable "Rest Finger to Open." It will emulate pre-iOS 10 TouchID where you don't need the extra click, aside from turning on the actual device. (Really hope the iPad gains Raise to Wake either with the next gen or iOS 11)

Absolutely hate it but watch out people on here will give you **** for your opinion about it. I made that mistake when ios10 first came out, god forbid these people can let you have your own opinion.

God forbid other people contribute their opinions when you post yours on a public forum. :p

As has been mentioned, there are some workarounds

Make sure the sensor and your finger are clean

And putting the same finger in there twice might hurt your chances of it working, since every time you unlock your phone it trains the sensor, and if it's having to train two of the same fingers, the less it knows that one finger

Chances are it has a lot to do with the lawsuits involved with Slide to Unlock. Solution? Get rid of it instead of continuing the legal battles they were in.
That makes no sense. It was Apple's patent that Samsung violated. By that reasoning, Apple would continue the use of this feature.

I've tried this, but it doesn't work.
