Good look trying to get a return on that investment. Too many people high-spec out their laptop and when they go to sell, thinking others are going to pay the premium they did. Just like cars - you may love that $4,000 spoiler, but it doesn't magically add $4,000 to your list price

Ha nah.... I rarely sell my devices. Hypothetically, I would sell it for $2K-2.5K though. I just mean in terms of value and use over time. haha

So last year, I bought the 15' 3.1ghz/1TB/560 model for close to $3400 because I wanted to future-proof it so badly (In 2014, my friend pressured me to edit some videos on my base 2010 MBP with adobe premiere CC and my computer was sluggish for 3 more years after that). This means that I waited for years to upgrade.

The 2017 MBP still runs great with no issues but now on reflection, I felt like I wasted about $1000 just for the possibility of "future-proofing." In fact, my use case now mainly involves writing blog posts and publishing them on wordpress, web browsing, minor photo editing. and playing some casual video games. The CPU usage is usually around 10-20% (occasionally going up to 30%), the ram usage averages 6-7GB, and I have over 80% of my SSD free.

On the flipside, I hope my current computer will last me for quite some time! Lesson learned for next time. haha

Regret?? You want to talk about regret? How about spending with tax and Applecare some $4600 on the 2TB version and then the one with the “correct” amount of ram comes out and I go ahead and spend another $4,600 a year later and only get $2,200 for the pervious year’s laptop after eBay and PayPal fees!

That is by far the biggest single loss on any tool purchase I have had in 30 years of being in business. And by the way, I don’t sit around wasting my time with blog posts and playing games, I actually use the hardware to the fullest.

This was part of a $50,000 upgrade cycle for my business that happens about once a decade so this has to be it for laptops and desktops for awhile.

I once bought a new Honda Prelude with a spoiler, and although I never did recoup the premium, I sure did enjoy it while I had it. ;) I hope this will also translate to my new MBP, which I did admittedly over-spec, but it is my main computer and I use it for my business as well as photo and video editing. Do I need it? Most probably not, especially the RAM, but I had my last MBP for 10 years. It came with 2 GB RAM, and at the time I thought that was plenty. It wasn't.

I bought my daughter an HP with a GIGANTIC 1 GB hard drive back in 2000, that I was convinced would last her through college...ha. While I don't expect to have this MBP for 10 years, I think I've "future proofed" it enough to take me quite far. I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't my last "real" laptop, but who knows what the future holds? My crystal ball is on the fritz.

TL;DR Enjoy what you have to the fullest without regret or rearview window peeping. None of us knows what tomorrow holds.

It’s a mentality of wanting to put the screws to people and not being fair about pricing too. It’s actually a tech entitlement thing I have noticed, the more steeped in tech people tend to be, the bigger ******s they are when it comes to paying people what they are worth and being fair or even the least bit empathetic to anyone but them selves.

I say this as a professional who has dealt with all kinds of customers in my business. Those in tech are by far the worst in taking people for a ride and not even being gracious about it.

WHOA that sucks for you.:( Writing educational blog posts is my job (fitness and psychology). But you proved my point.... spending $3400 was probably not the best return on investment for someone who mainly writes and using a little PS.... I could have easily gone with the base model. That was the whole point of the thread. People tend to overspend for what they actually need. haha

It’s life, it’s a tax write off and generally speaking I can make that loss back in 1-2 days of work.

It’s a sting I have not felt for awhile though so it is still a sore spot but I will get over it. I’ll certainly remember the next product cycle....;-)

Just a FYI - I offered you $2,450 on eBay and would have done more here but you turned me down. I wanted your machine. If you only for $2,200 after ebay and fees...maybe you can back out ;)

I got more than $2450 for it but the fees drop it down to $2200. I’m sorry but when my mechanic, plumber, an artist, interior designer tells me what the price is, I don’t try to hammer them down, I pay them what they are asking because their time is their life. I also expect the same in return for my services.

So when I see this prolific narrative of people trying to get back at least some of their investment in equipment being looked at as some kind of stupidity, I take umbrage to that.

Good luck in your search.

So you took a loss on eBay instead of selling for more here. I would have offered you$2,400 after PayPal fees/shipping etc.

But Yeah, no problem.

Very happy with my early 2013 15" 16gb RAM i7 RMBP, on which I am running the Mojave beta without problem, and my 2015 13" i7 16gb RAM RMBP -- both work perfectly. Might upgrade for the lower weight and smaller footprint of the 2018 versions, but I HATE the butterfly keyboard. Will probably leave well enough alone.

I made an offer! And then it ended and my offer wasn’t accepted. I did 2450. Would have made a better one here so you didn’t get hit with double fees.

For a good solid day I had it automatically reject offers lower than $2,500 so I had no idea. eBay has gotten worse and worse in regards to how all this works.

One thing is for sure, I will be keeping my current machines for at least 5 years which means keeping my cameras for that long too.

I’m honestly looking forward to getting my fine art darkroom done so I can start monetizing it then and being done with the whole digital rat race, this could be the last new of any of this stuff I buy at this point.
