Excellent..thanks for detailed information.

That is EXACTLY how I felt! Interesting that even with the i7 (I had the i5) you still felt this. I had the same experience...it felt like a computer from a few years back..slight pauses..hesitations..etc. Was not expecting it.

Let me ask..how much RAM did you have?

I did a proper reinstall, blah blah blah…
I think it's obvious my 290 GPU is not big enough to support the display.
I have 2x8G memory.

I just came back from apple, told the guy i was surprised by the poor quality of the smooth on display. He told me it was due to the 5K and it should be solved by soft…

However i'm gonna change for a bigger GPU on 5K or for the 2013 model, don't know yet, it's sure is a nice screen this 5K !

I don't think it's obvious at all. The issues I've seen are small.

----------

I got mine in last Wednesday, and I am considering returning it as well.

Compared to my 6 year old Windows PC, it runs less smoothly and requires more restarts due to things stopping to work correctly. Yesterday mission control would not open until I restarted.

I periodically even get a delay while typing or scrolling, having to wait for the letters to appear or for the page to move.

I have not found a way to disable animations which slow down my workflow (compared to instantenous actions). When I click for fullscreen, I want it to go to fullscreen instantaneously.

I find it confusing that I am not able to minimize a full screen window with one command. I have to first leave full screen, and then minimize from there. Why is this two steps?

I bought this for the 5k screen, and as I posted in the other thread, I have found that Apple's own programs do not support 5k. I am a bit surprised that the 5k integration received such glowing reviews. I remember seeing the word "seamless" used. https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1823702/

I found the iPhoto app a little buggy in regards to syncing with my iPhone. My photos actually synced better with my Windows computer.

I have a bunch of images on my computer, and wanted to try to change the ginger bread man icon at the logon screen for something else, but this seems to be impossible without having iCloud enabled. I don't understand why I cant chose any image file on my iMac.

I still might keep it. The screen is very pretty, and I love having iMessage and FaceTime on my desktop. I also like the Safari browser so far.

You either got a defective unit or there's something else going on. I've never had to restart mine at all.

Likewise. Not sure my 5K iMac has been restarted more than a couple of times since day 1, for software updates.

I have had less issues today. I was adjusting system settings and installing a couple of programs earlier this weekend - perhaps that is what caused some of the issues.

I am feeling pleased with mine tonight. I am going to keep it.

I ordered mine with the base SSD option. I haven't heard any noise at all. Cant even tell if it has a fan.

There's a problem right there. Something is seriously up if it's not running *much* smoother than Windows.

If you're used to Windows you might be used to fiddling with settings and installing all sorts of nonsense. What you should do with OSX is a clean install and then leave it alone. It should never require restarts or "not open" things.

Only issue is mission control

My iMac is excellent. I haven't had any issue except for lag in mission control. Never had any other issues and am very pleased with my purchase. I was tempted to go with upgraded specs but with the potential heat concerns due to the debatable temps of the i7 295; I decided to stick with what I got. The machine is very quiet and the system stays cool. I am positive that the mission control lag should be corrected in a future update and perhaps as software gets optimized for 5K resolution other lag people have experienced with other software will as well.

I got the follow specs and it's been flawless so far

i5
290 GPU
24 GB RAM

Few things. I didn't restore from Time Machine and set display to "best for retina"

I noticed this thing eats up memory very easy which might help explain poor performance of the iMac in the Apple store that i was using. I don't know why Apple shipped them with only 8GB. I was using 13GB just from mutiple tabs in Safari last night with nothing else running.

The only issue I have is in external storage. I moved all of my bus-powered HDDs to the iMac and it complains every single time it goes to sleep. Then Finder gets upset, the system locks, and I need to do a hard-boot to get it back up. No external drives, no issues. That's a big problem considering the internal SSD is half the size of the previous, and I keep all the photos and itunes library on external disks.

Hrm.

That seems to be a OS X problem with USB 3 drives.

You might try "Jetison" from the App Store until OS X is fixed.

If you can afford it, I'd move all your drives to a thunderbolt 2 external bay such as this:

There are absolutely no sleep issues of any kind with this dock. This is by far the best computer I have ever owned (and I've owned many). I bought this the first day it could be ordered from the Apple store. I agree that USB 3.0 drives are a bit wonky in Mac OS. Not sure why...

I'd love to pick one of those up, but the Mac itself pretty well broke the bank. Another 5-600 dollars is, for the moment, out of the question. Perhaps I'll do it come spring. In the meantime, I guess I'll run lean.

it's good to know that such external bays have no issues though.

I'm running Jettison on trial mode right now, but it doesn't seem to stop the issues very well. It won't eject the drive iTunes is on when iTunes is running, and so it won't allow it to sleep. Seems we go round and round. For all that bus-powered USB 3 drives are quiet, invisible and portable, they're kind of a PITA in this case.

I finally got to look at the new iMac at Best Buy. Side-by-side with the non-retina was a noticeable difference, but not enticing enough.

I was at The Mac Store yesterday and did a comparison on the basic look and I didn't really see any difference. Text is much sharper but I won't be using one for text display very often.

I would be getting one mainly for the 4GHz option which competes nicely with the 6-core Mac Pro.

The salesperson said they have been running a graphics capability program that they were using for the Mac Pro on the base Retina iMac and they haven't noticed any fan noise. It's not a noisy store either.

To be fair one of the worst places for evaluating displays are in big open bright stores like that. It's a similar problem with trying to judge a TV in a Best Buy.....that's why Best Buy's started setting up those Magnolia TV rooms. It was completely useless trying to judge a $5000 TV in a bright open room.

I purchased the 5k within minutes of the applestore.com re-opening after the end of the Apple event where it was announced back in October. I had been wanting to purchase a new 27" iMac and the rumor was that they were going to release a retina screen so I had been waiting for a few months. The presentation about the device looked so amazing and I was so excited that the rumors were true. I went with the upgraded 4.0 GHz i7 CPU, 4 GB graphics card, and 16 GB RAM. I don't use it for any professional work at all, but since I usually keep my computers for 5 years or so I always try to get more then what I need. It cost a LOT of money, so I was nervous.

It finally arrived after about a week. I have been using it for 3 solid months now and I am absolutely blown away with it. It is so amazing. I use mine in my house and much of the time is is completely quiet and I can't hear it at all. When I am doing video conversions or playing high end gamesI definitely hear the fan kick in, but even then it isn't loud, just noticable.

I have had maybe 2 issues since I've had it. One was due to Safari not finding web pages when clicking on links and the other was the Mail application not synching with the gmail server. Both of these issues were due to Yosemite, not the 5k iMac and have since been resolved through updates. I believe most if not all of the things mentioned in this thread were due to some bugs in Yosemite and nothing to do with the hardware.

The non 5k 27" iMac is also a great computer and will probably suit most people's needs. I admit the 5k is more of a luxury, but it is stellar and I can certainly tell you that after using it for a while you will come to completely notice the difference in screen/display quality compared to all other display screens on any other computer.
