Ma
I recently did some sound searching and took a look at my needs i had an iPhone 7 plus that was a year old i had bought it with the intention of getting the X, i decided $1100 was too much to spend and really started to look at what i needed i ended up downgrading to the iPhone SE it does everything i need to do and the same things as my 7plus. Now i can pocket my phone and operate it one handed i love to. At the same time i decided to spend the extra money on the iPad Pro 12.9 inch. I did love reading comics on it, but at the end of the day the same thing happened, i could do everything i need on my 2017 iPad so back the pro went.

i wish apple would stop this end of hitting just the bottom line with iPad or the top.I i don't need the Pro but want something with a screen as nice as the Air 2, laminated , true tone, etc apple has nothing for me unless i spend the big bucks. I'm happy with the 2017 but i'd pend a few hundred more for a better screen

Yes, as Apple diversifies their iOS device lineup, we're seeing different "tracks". Not much different than what they do on the macOS end of things. But it is new for iOS and so, as you've experienced, there is a bit of adjustment necessary to determine which track you're going to be on.

I've already decided. I'm on the low-end track. THAT for me, is where the value is. Before the introduction of the iPhone SE, I was set to continue on with my Sharp Aquos Crystal phone until another Android phone caught my eye. But the SE brought me back. (my phone prior to the Aquos Crystal was an iPhone 4) Previously, I went from a 15" Macbook Pro to a 21" iMac and 11" Macbook Air which combined cost significantly LESS than the MBP alone.

My 1G 12.9 Pro will be my last top/high-end iPad device. If I didn't have an iPad now and had to choose one, it would be the 2017 iPad. It is (again just my opinion) the best value. Apple does an outstanding job of selling the latest features as "must have" to the point where many people trade/sell their existing devices to get the latest ones so that they "don't miss out" on those new features. It took me a while to be able to properly weigh the value of things like ProMotion, TrueTone, etc.

But having said that, I'm puzzled by your "I'm happy with the 2017 but i'd pend a few hundred more for a better screen" comment. You CAN spend a few hundred more and get a 10.5 Pro which has those things that you consider to be a better screen.

I can understand being perfectly happy with the 2017 iPad. I have both the 2017 and 10.5 pro, and I can see I’d be completely satisfied with just the 2017.

What keeps me also with the 10.5 are a few things I appreciate and enjoy. The 20% larger screen, faster processor (future proofing perhaps), larger storage with base model, True Tone display, better camera, and a few others. But otherwise the 2017 would be just fine.

No more higher definition screen, still at the 2012 standard of ppi of 264 of iPad 3. I guessing Apple still concern still with battery life?

How about a refurbished IPP 9.7?

Yeah or even a new one. The 9.7 iPad pros are on sale at many places now and that’s for brand new ones. I’m very close to grabbing one myself as an upgrade to my air1. I wish they had the 4GB of RAM that the 10.5 has but other than that its got solid hardware that should last for a while.

The pro is really geared towards the pros , for everyone else the 2017 iPad does the job. That includes me as well.
Who/What's a Pro? Because to me the term iPad Pro is just Apple's marketing spin. If what you mean by "Pro" is someone who sketches and draws then OK, you got me. /s

If one can live with the iPad 2017 display which is still nice then save your money because the budget iPad is a solid value.

I originally got the first GEN 12.9 December 2015 and said I wouldn’t be upgrading to the second GEN but then came June 2017 and I immediately went for it selling my first gen to my dad and getting the 2nd gen 12.9 Looking back now call the new features of the 2017 model are not very noticeable and I would’ve rather stayed with the same 1stgen model But my dad did get an iPad out of it and he was looking to buy one anyways so it worked out for the both of us he got a 12.9 iPad and I got the next generation

Yes by pro I mean people who really need that iPad & for them the price is easily justified. I use it for almost everything else other than the things that require the use of the pencil. The 2017 iPad works flawlessly for me.

Also, I really don’t know why people diss the screen. Seems absolutely fine to me.

People diss the 2017 screen because it's not laminated to the glass so there's a gap to it just like the original iPad Air. I purchased the 2017 iPad and tbh it's a great tablet and I never had a problem with the Air's screen. I'm not a heavy taper so I never had the clicking noise that it can produce while using the screen.

However I did return the 2017 iPad after updating my iPad Air to iOS 11.1 and I found out that it runs the latest OS just fine. In fact I was surprised how smooth and responsive it still feels. I'll wait to see if Apple updates the 10.5 iPad Pro next year. I'd like to get a slightly bigger screen.

You’re still chillin with the air1 then like me? Nice. I’m soooooo close to upgrading but just can’t quite pull the trigger. I also have found that ios11 runs pretty good on my device, amazingly. It’s the browsing experience that could be better at times. The overall performance though is still solid.

Best Buy has 32GB iPad Pro 9.7 with LTE unlocked for $479. Very tempting since that’s a great price on that model and it’s brand new too. The 10.5 has the 4GB of Ram which I would live to have but I don’t need any of the other "pro" features it offers. I find the 9.7 screen size is perfect for me. Ugh. Decisions, lol.

I also found the Air 1 runs fine with IOS 11, although slightly laggy. But I recently traded mine in for a 2017 iPad at Best Buy. Mine had only 16gb and these days that’s just too tight. My thinking also was that its A7 processsor was getting old in the tooth. Although it ran fine now, who knows how well it’ll perform under future upgrades and releases of IOS.

How is the standard 2017 iPad 9.7" been for you? A worthy upgrade or what? Love to hear!

I’m extremely happy with my 10.5 Pro. Pro motion is one of those things that’s really nice to have but not a game changer. I personally love it . What is a game changer is the 4GB of RAM. This thing just screams while using apps and while multitasking which I do a lot of. True Tone is definitely one of those subtle but amazing things I can’t live without ironically. iPads always strained my eyes after extended use but not anymore.

If you’re on a budget and just need an iPad for basic things then the 2017 is definitely an amazing value.

That’s a good question. Like you, I also loved the Air 1. So light and responsive. I don't know what capacity Air 1 you have, but mine was 16gb and started to be a problem with space. But otherwise could have continued with it under IOS 11 and been very happy.

The new standard 2017 9.7 is impressive, especially for the price when on sale. I know you’re looking for an LTE version, but I grabbed the base 32gb WiFi version on the recent Best Buy sale for $270. It may come down to $199 on Black Friday at a few online stores, I hear. Probably similar discount for the LTE version.

But it’s been a great performer with an impressive display. I don’t notice the infamous lack of reflective coating at all. I highly recommend it and worth the upgrade in terms of added space and processing power for the future.

In this era of iOS devices, more people should consider older models. For example, the best “value” for an iPad may be the 2015 12.9” iPad Pro model or the 2016 9.7” iPad Pro model, if you can find them new. Similarly, for iPhones, the SE and 7 may be better buys than the 8 or X for some users.

Thanks for the feedback! I do want the LTE version so I’ll have to factor that in. My current storage is 32GB which ends up being enough for me. I’m closely watching various stores for deals. If the right Buy comes up for the base iPad I may just go that route. :)

Cool story bro... j/k ;)

I found I can’t do nearly as much work on my phone compared to my 12.9” 2017 Pro or 2016 9.7” Pro. Though, I do 4K video and do most rendering and editing on my iPhone due to the better camera. Unfortunately, I can’t write or draw with my phone, and even if I didn’t need to draw or write, I’d have a hard time with the iPhone and iPad 2017 only.
Of course everyone’s needs vary. :)

Kallum.

They should’ve continued selling the 9.7 Pro.
I agree, they should have just had the 9.7” Pro be the iPad 5th gen basic model. Just have the price at $475 or something.
I feel the 2017 regular iPad is just good for consumption and light work.

I disagree, I'm not a pro, I find what it has to offer exceeds what the 2017 iPad has.

Of course there are exceptions. But the idea is really if one doesn’t use the pen then the pro will only be used for a bigger screen which is mostly relevant while watching content and I’d rather watch content on my TV than on the iPad. It depends on your usage. For my usage spending for the Pro would have been waste of money.

Well I think they could’ve still called it the Pro, it’s not in any way a “basic model,” but they could have kept it in the lineup between the iPad and the iPad Pro 10.5.
