... Found an email address, emailed the person, she replied, and she picked up the iPod, expressing her very deep gratitude, and some surprise at me for not just keeping it or selling it on ebay or whatever.

Kudos to you for being guided by principle.

dotdotdot, dcfc rocks :D

balamw, i was merely kidding :p even if pink was my favorite color and i didnt already have three iPods floating around the house, I would still have returned it. and there was an engraving on the back, all the more useful in finding who it belonged to :)

frankly what surprised me more than her gratitude was that she even got me christmas gifts :D :D :D a thank you would have been awesome enough, a card spectacular, but gifts to boot! *warm fuzzy feeling*

Gosh, reading this gave me two warm, fuzzy feelings.

One for you going the extra mile to try to identify it and let the person know
And the other for the person being appreciative enough of you doing the right thing to get you a gift in return. Much cheaper than replacing the iPod after all but still a great gesture.

Must say, if I found one, I'd return it since I'd be hoping if I lost mine, someone would do the same. I did once find an address book in the street so posted it off to the 'Mum' address in it on the grounds that Mum should know whose it was!

Me too, well mostly.... ;)

I do believe in there is some theft deterrence (a pink mini being more rare than its silver cousin and thus harder to conceal in the open, plus the fact that most men and many women wouldn't be caught dead using a pink iPod.) though the difference is probably extremely slight.

The return insurance part was definitely tongue in cheek, unfortunately, as people like you are few and far between.

That was a great thing to do, I know I would have done the same.

I know what my iPod means to me and I can only assume that it would mean the same thing to someone else.

The authorization trick was quite smart! well done!

And, yeah, Death Cab, what can I say, great band.

Hmm, my Dad found a blue 2G 4GB mini when he was out for a walk a while back. It was before the iTMS opened here so there wouldn't have been anyway to determine it's owner. He dropped it in at the cop shop and registered it so 8 weeks later if no-one claimed it it was legally ours.

It's been more than 8 weeks, might ring the folks tomorrow and see what happened with it. Wouldn't put it past the coppers to nick it though and take it home as a nice present for the kiddies...

It might be your Xmas present :)

I've always wondered how you'd track down the owner of a lost iPod.

Good for you tracking the person down!

wish there were more peeps like u

Gosh the world needs more people like you. I remember losing something important to me and never getting it back, but if every one was honest like u, man what a different place the world would be.

1000 Bonus karma points for you.

I think it would be extremely rare for someone to get their iPod returned if it was lost.
