I have played with many many 10s, and decided that it just wasn't for me, so I decided to take the same money and bought the 256GB 8 Plus for $969 + Taxes. People have called me crazy, but I have had the phone since January, and I am still enjoying every minute of it. The A11 chip does feel much faster, and I am liking that Portrait Lighting features that it has.

Yes it does feel like the old 7+ I used to have, but I do use the new wireless charging feature, and bought a few Qi cheap charging pads for the whole house. I also found a Honeycomb branded wireless battery power bank from Walmart for only $39.

Was I crazy for spending the same amount I would have on a 10 on my 8 Plus? I figured I will just get whatever comes after the X when my AT&T Next upgrade would allow it.

If you don’t mind watching / having an LCD display rather than OLED and are happy with the home button style phone than your pick was good.

You get 256 GB over 64 GB for the same price and a larger screen.

As well as piece of mind, No possible “burn in” retention issue, where the verdict for X is not out and yet to be determined.

So as mentioned if your happy don’t look back. You Tried them both and prefer the home button. Nothing wrong with that, and it’s the last generation you will see with the home button.

Good

I don't understand the question.

You bought what you wanted and were willing to pay for it. Are you looking for validation of your choice?

I spent over $1000 over the course of 2.5 years to pay off a 128GB iPhone 6s+. I always get the maximum capacity Apple offers.

But I don't ask if anyone thinks I'm crazy for getting what I want to get.

The bolded part above is all that really matters. If you are happy with your purchase why care what others think?

P.S. I had a similar scenario recently and made a thread on it: I already had a paid off 6s... yet I tried out an 8 Plus and was wrestling with the decision to return it or not. Was it really worth the $799 + taxes? In the end I decided to return the 8 Plus and stick with my 6s as it wasn’t a big enough difference to justify the $$$ (which could go towards more productive things at the moment like my student loans or future down payment on a home).

Everyone’s situation is different but I’m happy with the decision I made at the time and plan to keep my 6s for a few more years (while getting a $29 battery replacement in Dec 2018). Worst case scenario I’ll simply wait until Apple starts selling refurbished 8 Plus units and pick one up at a more affordable price in the future.

In the opinion of this random internet stranger? Yes. $1000+ on a phone is crazy for an average person (yes, I am an average person too). So if you are an average person, then I think it's crazy. Especially because you had a 7+ before this.

Only you can make the decision what you justify for the means of what you spend your money on in terms of a phone. If you think you truly like it and will utilize its functionality over the iPhone X, then you made the right decision.

Yes, the 7 is essentially the same phone. Would have been wiser going that route. But hey, if you have the money and need wireless charging.

Disagree. I returned my 7 Plus for the 6S Plus. 8 Plus hardware, inside and out, is better. It’s not extravagant but it’s significant IMO.

I am sure it's an improvement, but I saw good deals for a 7 at $500. $500 better? I don't think so.

I personally wouldn’t pay $200 for a 7 or 7 Plus.. unless I had an immediate buyer. The camera, for me, was virtually broken. I did extensive testing and it consistently jacked up images of my kids. Horrible skin tone and water color effect. Other images were great if it was non-people. Landscape or large objects filling the image turned out great. ..I even tried the 7 again recently while having issues with my 8 (now fixed) and the image issues still there.

I don’t post pictures of my kids so I cannot show the difference but it was glaring.

FWIW, the 8 Plus is nailing these same images that the 6S Plus got right and they are even better.

That sucks, I had no issues with the camera on my 7 Plus when I had it.

I’ve said if the speaker-clipping issue was fixed the 8 Plus, IMO, would be the best iPhone ever made by Apple. They fixed it and I think it is.

Are the blacks perfectly dark? Nope

Does my 8 Plus have horrible red eye and eye glow images in low light? Nope.

Do I have to use my passcode almost 50% or the time like my wife does with her X? Nope
..when FID does work my TID is still way faster.

Is OIS on a zoom lens on a phone more marketing than actual IQ? Yup.

X is a great phone. IMO, 8/8 Plus is better.

If you don’t have white kids you were likely fine. There were/are also focus issues, especially with the 7 Plus. I did a full analysis with a 6, 6S Plus and 7 Plus and 7 Plus got smoked by both. I even used apps to isolate lenses. I will try to find images to share.
[doublepost=1520346726][/doublepost]The 7 Plus was very capable.. unless it was skin tones and focus. Here is an example of what the 7 Plus does well.

It's not the choice I would have made, but if you're enjoying it and feel it was worth the price then no need to worry.

In my case, I went with the X because it's clearly the direction Apple is going and I don't think the old style iPhone design and UI is going to last more than another year if that.

Well, that's not true.

Naw not crazy OP.. Get what you want and go tone deaf to haters. If you dig the Plus then it was a good choice for you. Not a choice I would have made but we are different people...

Enjoy the Plus and rock on!

^^THIS^^

I don't get and get tired of this question on the X. 2.5 years later, basically same price for more iPhone with twice the storage. A no-brainer---:)

Enjoy your new iPhone OP---:)

If you like it that’s all the matters. Also you get Touch ID over Face ID that’s a good bonus by itself. And that’s coming from a guy that has an iPhone 10

lso you get Touch ID over Face ID that’s a good bonus by itself.

faceID is a benefit to some. I cycle daily and when the temps dip I wear long fingered cycling gloves that have touchscreen pads in the fingers. These pads are there so you can use touchscreen cycling computers and they work great with phones as well.

When wearing my cycling gloves I always had to remove one to unlock the phone with touchID. With faceID there is no need to do so.

Also, touchID fails at about the same rate as faceID for me. I don't notice either being more accurate than the other and touchID has issues if your finger is damp.

As others have said, if you're happy with it and can afford it, then you're not crazy.

We all get criticised for what we buy, I get criticised for getting iPhones in the first place when a £100 Android phone is "good enough to do the job" but fact of the matter is technology is a passion to me and it's my money to 'waste', just as yours is. It's no more crazy than buying a nice car when a cheap little 0.9L runabout will "do the job", it depends whether your passion is in cars, gadgets, or moneysaving :)

Personally I'm not really sold on FaceID, the notch or the 18:9 aspect ratio and saw an 8+ (64GB) at a good price so think it's an excellent decision. I snapped this one up as it gives me like 3-4 years not to have to worry about those things if I don't want to, until Apple have better implementations (or I give in). The only thing I'm questioning is the wisdom of having gone for 64 instead of 256, because if it's going to last me 3-4 years then 64 is going to feel tight after a couple. But it was a very good price (£500), so whatever.

Well, that's not true.

Your are correct and thank you for catching my error. I didn’t know this based on the actual phone size to display screen ratio.

Screen size on X is 5.8 and 8+ is 5.5 , and X smaller to hold too.
