Too much water. But 99% Isopropyl Alcohol will do the trick. You can the rinse components with it, and if you use a soft (I said soft!) brush, cleaning them should be a breeze.

If it's not a Retina model, get that back cover off ASAP and remove the hard drive.

That way, even if the laptop is toast, your data is ok. You could in theory buy a second hand laptop of similar specs to your current one and pop in your old drive.

It doesnt even have to be of similar specs...

was dumping clean laundry on the bed, macbook was on the bed, bottle of detergent was hidden in the basket, bottle fell onto macbook, loose cap flys off, ~2.5 cups of laundry detergent pours directly onto my macbook pro keyboard.

Absolutely do this first. If no detergent got onto the controller, the HDD is likely safe, even if the rest of the notebook is damaged.

If you don't have a valid backup ... my first priority would be to get the disk drive out of the machine, clean it off as best I could, and put it in a safe place while you deal with the rest of the mess.

If you have access to another computer, get a cheap USB enclosure for your disk drive and extract your critical data for safekeeping to another drive.

Now ... back to trying to save the computer ...

Certain laundry detergents glow under backlight, just like some other bodily fluids. If you ever sell your computer, the new owner will think you watched a lot of porn.
