I started over with iCloud

    Straight from the iCloud section of system prefs on my mac, and in the iCloud part of the iPhone. I deleted everything iCloud/ME and started over.
    And, knock on wood, it seems to be working, since 10am this morning. No password errors, no smtp errors. No clue why.

    My do over is still working pretty well!

    A few disappearing messages (I forward my work email) but then, that happened before iCloud as well.

    That said: no more password prompts. No more smtp failures.

    Not why it's working but it has been for 24 hrs.

    Day three and my ME email in the cloud is still working. And I still have no idea why starting over worked for it.
