$5 would be a bargain, right now it works out to be $6.57 here where I live.
$1.46 a liter
1 liter X 4.54 = 1 gallon.

Ouch. I’m sorry you have to pay that much.

Yeah around 2008/2009 gas prices were very expensive. It’s kind of funny to look back to remember the alarmists saying we’d never see gas under $4 again.

It sucked too because gas prices hadn’t been a problem for decades, so most cars didn’t have great gas mileage compared today. At the time I drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a V8, which got 14mpg in the city, maybe 20mog on the highway, 18mpg in mixed driving- which at the time was considered pretty “good” for auto manufactures SUV.

I guess the good thing that came out of that was auto manufacturers were pushed to create more fuel efficient drivetrains.

Yikes! Bet most of that is taxes, huh? Is it worthwhile to cross the border and buy gas in the US? I know many cross over to buy stuff.
Not for us here on Van. Island, the ferry fare to the mainland is almost $100 return.
But I do believe that many mainlanders do what you mention.
I'm old enough to remember gas at 39 - 49 cents a gallon, but at the same time I remember working for $1/hr, back when I retired about 20 years ago I was making $32.50/hr, so I guess it's all pretty much relative.

edit: been a few years since I've used the Ferries, just checked and a return fare for a standard vehicle and driver is well over $100 these days.
As I say all the time "the older I get the better my back yard looks":D

UK gallon a tad more volume than the US gallon? But £1.21 a litre one of the cheapest near me, quick check on line and todays rate $1.58. Motorways (freeways??) knock it out 1.50 or so.

Whenever I bump into this thread title now I can't help thinking of the gas station with an attendant but no customers... specifically the iconic and somewhat eerie Edward Hopper painting "Gas, 1940"

Things are changing quickly. Everything there was automated via machine. No employees around. If stuff like this spreads quickly unemployment numbers will be changing pretty quickly.

Many stations in my area leave the pumps / lighting around the pumps on when they close at night.

People who can pay at the pump do not need to worry about buying gas after hours.

I think 50% of all gas stations here are without employees... Is this really not a thing in the US? How strange. What do you need them for? We only have employees at stations who sell stuff other than gas and car washes.

A majority of the gas stations contain a small store.
