I successfully upgraded from 4gb to 8gb BUT not all screws will go back in

Pics.

I spend all day upgrading RAM in these things, if the screws came out but won't go back in there are two options.

1. You're doing it wrong.
2. You broke something.

(That's what she said)

Correct. As for 2, if you accidentally cross thread the screws they may not go in all the way. No force should be need to reinstall the cover, I've done it numerous times.

FYI: That thread and the reference provided for iFixit is for a Early-2011 MacBook Pro, which apparently has three different types of screws:

  • Three 14.4 mm Phillips screws
  • Three 3.5 mm Phillips screws
  • Four 3.5 mm shouldered Phillips screws

The OP has a Mid-2009 MacBook Pro which only had two different types of screws:

  • Three 13.5 mm Phillips screws.
  • Seven 3 mm Phillips screws.

Note: that the Mid-2009 doesn't have the "shouldered" screws that are used on the Early-2011 MacBook Pros.

Here's the iFixit page for replacing the RAM on a Mid-2009 MacBook Pro and here's a video from OWC for doing the same. Good Luck.

This has got to be the funniest thread ever. It's amazing that you didn't break something when you installed the modules if you can't remember what order the screws came out. Then you post about it, very funny. Look in your paperwork for the manual. You will find a diagram with how the screws are installed. Remember, lefty loosey and righty tighty.

Well can people who have EVER even SEEN a Macbook Pro please reply??

Jesus... I am willing to bet all of us own a Macbook Pro AND have installed RAM or a hard drive. We are all trying to help. If it still doesn't work then a trip to the Apple Store is in order. Try to calm down. Raging won't help.

First of all, you can't put it on "backwards".

Ok I will try ANGLING them but that the "back screws" or in that image "the 4 tiny front screws".. the 2 middle ones still fall out.. they sink in through the threads and then sink right back out when I turn the macbook over...

Secondly.. Imagine if I described that the other way.. the back screws for me are the "front" ones in that image.. sillys

Im telling you the screws will not go back in their OWN spot..

it isn't "you'r doing it wrong" because 5 out of 10 screws went in.. those were wrong or no?

I only operate in a field of logic not "forum wisdom"... there is no "doing it wrong" only "the screws wont go back in".

Im not dumb either.. I will try angling and report back.. hopefully that will get the long ones back in!!

the long ones go in straight, your doing it wrong

The screws all went back to where they came from... Im not sure if saying it AGAIN is gonna convince any of you though...

If I broke something then this computer is total garbage!!! How can u break it by unscrewing it!!

Ive had zero success screwing in the long screws by angling or anything.. it screws in and then just pokes out and wont sink in..

Im tempted to take it to Apple.. or just skip it all together.. whats the worst that could happen?? DUST?? ill just clean it now and again.. better than dealing with these nightmare screws lol...

I've taken the bottom case off at least 10 times and I've never had a problem with the screws. Either you got EXTREMELY unlucky and got 9 faulty screws or you did something wrong when trying to put them back in. Take it back to Apple to see what they see but chances are you broke something.

You start a thread asking for help than tell everyone giving you advise that they are wrong and you are right

Chill out, man. You're obviously doing something wrong, or something is broken. Either way, you did something wrong or you wouldn't be posting this question. Accepting that is the first step to solving your problem here. People here are trying to help.

Now that you've accepted that you might not have done everything exactly correctly, check out the repair guide at ifixit.com:

http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-MacBook-Pro-13-Inch-Unibody-Mid-2009-RAM/1334/1

There's not a lot to it. You've got ten screws and ten holes. Even if you're absolutely certain that you're putting the screws back exactly where they came from how can it hurt to experiment a bit and see if they line up better in different locations? Experiment a bit but don't force anything. Be gentle. ;-)

If you just can't get the screws to fit, consult an expert.

Well, if you're certain that you're putting the correct screws in the correct locations and that you didn't do anything wrong, then the only conclusion I can surmise is that either the screws or the holes have been stripped.

OP, upload pics. We all know you're doing something wrong, and that will help us find the problem. Also, if you ever expect to get help on this forum, don't be a jerk to the people who try to help you.

Try reading what I said not what others did.. then you'll understand that I already said NUMEROUS TIMES I didn't do it wrong.

A shining example of why I no longer read these forums.. very hurtful post.. moderators are plain lazy I guess..

You have no right to say Im being a JERK? When you stop making false accusations maybe your posts will carry some credence..

I've only numerously replied to everyone saying I put them in using the wrong order saying I haven't..

This is what is coming out of gradeschools??

If people are saying I put it on backwards then obviously they have no idea what they are saying and should NOT be posting. Thats pretty simple.. Then to hear them go on and say "Im doing something wrong".. its comical..

I don't think you're Obama Nation usage of the name Jesus is remotely appropriate.. you're the one creating excessive emotional drama about me simply requesting that only people who HAVE replaced RAM post? Not everyone has if you even paid attention to the thread instead of taking my posts out of context.. Wish I could help you more but as you see Im currently having an issue with my Macbook, I don't have time to explain this any further..

Just admit you did something wrong so you can go on from there.
Post a video of what is happening so people here can help you.

What is this the inquisition now?? Admit I did what wrong?? WHAT WENT WRONG?? I unscrewed the screws.. put in the RAM.. it says 8GB of RAM and it used to say 4 GB of RAM after I put the case back on partially.. I cleaned some excess dust on the drives.. put the lid back on (it only goes on ONE WAY .. not "backwards" haha?).. and then each screw on the table was right next to the hole it came from.. I attempted to screw each one back in and several failed to screw in.

As I previously posted: angling the long screws was fruitless.. it screwed in a "bit" farther perhaps but not much.

The engineering on these Macbooks is laughable.. the unscrewed fine.. what could I have done wrong??

The threads aren't stripped I promise.. I'm taking it in to the Apple store and giving them a shot..

You're the only one who has ever had this problem that I know of. So either you got one machine with all bad screws, which is EXTREMELY unlikely, or you did something wrong when trying to put them back, which is very likely.

If the screws didn't fall out before you took them out then you must have broken something.

Why do you say the engineering on these Macbooks is laughable when you're the only one having the problem? I've taken the bottom case of at least 10 times and never had a problem. Nothing is easier and I can't understand how someone could mess it up.

No offense but you are the only who seems to be complaining about this. I think the majority of respondents have a differing opinion on the engineering of the MBPs.

While we cannot fully help you, mostly because of the lack of images, we can say that the design and build quality of MBPs is tops

Why do you keep asking "what did I do wrong?"? According to all of your posts, you did nothing wrong. I'm willing to entertain the possibility that something went wrong during the manufacturing of your computer. Since its possible that you have some sort of defect, you should take your computer in to a store that does warranty repair on Apple laptops. They will diagnose what is wrong with your machine. Good luck!

Edit: I see that you are already taking your machine in for a diagnosis. Hope it gets fixed for you quickly

Try seeing if the screws go in without the casing. What I mean is, without replacing the casing, put all the screws in their correct holes. If they don't go in, then they're stripped or in the wrong hole. If you can't find a hole, then you may have dislodged a piece.

Either way, I've not had any issues the three times I've swapped my HD out.

If you brought it to Apple, I'm eager to hear what they said.

Maybe you should take the cover back off and try putting the 3 long screws in the panel, then looking from the bottom you should try resting them in their place.

Sounds like you put the other 5 in first and tightened them.

OP, I'm going to add you to my ignore list now. I've helped a lot of people on these boards, but you'll no longer be among them. I hope others can stand your arrogance and will continue to help, but I can longer handle it.

I have a screw on the middle left side that will not go in all the way. It only goes in maaaaybe half way. I need to take it to an apple store to see what they say. It seems like the screw hole wasn't tapped properly, so the screw cross threaded.

I've done this type of thing 10's of times and have never had a problem, this is odd.

it's been about 2 weeks now since the OP's last post. Any updates?
Did he ever get to the Apple store for help?
Curious as to what transpired.
