Well, I tried. Wrote a post recently on the following thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=909354&highlight=inoperable Today, I called AppleCare and went through the issue with them. The guy had me do a complete restore on iTunes, which wipes out content on the iPad and resets to factory defaults. He wanted to make sure the inoperable sleep/wake button wasn't a software problem. The good news? That restore got the sleep/wake button working again. The bad news? When trying to sync the iPad and reload the apps and content, all kinds of error messages ensued, and then the sleep/wake button died again! This all happened after the tech call with Apple, so I called them back to report the problems. Oddly, the sleep/wake button woke up and started working again as I was talking to tech support, but then even more sync error messages appeared. So, the tech guy said my problem is probably hardware-related, not software, and authorized me to take the iPad back to the Apple store where I purchased it to swap it out. Luckily, that store had a 64 gig Wifi model in stock, and I went there an hour later to do the swap-out. Had to wait in the store for a half hour to complete the swap as the agent there had to do some stuff (paper work, hooking up the new iPad to his Mac for some reason, etc.). But now I have a new iPad to replace the Lemon. Did the sync and everything ran smoothly, so I'm fine. The Apple Care people told me this was the first time they heard of the problems that I was having. Amazing.
