Since you are saying it is coming from the left speaker area, the only possible moving part is the left internal fan or the optical drive, as in this picture:

I do believe, if it is coming from that area, that it can't be the Hard Drive or battery.
(This goes for both the unibody macbook pro and the older non-unibody versions)

The optical drive is on the other side. ;)

That MacBook Pro is upside down. It has to be to access the internals of the machine.
 
Ahhh yess. Thanks :). So to the OP. I would say it's either your left fan or speaker giving out.
