It bothers me that WhatsApp is owned by Facebook, but I wish the U.S. used WhatsApp as the standard messaging app so that it would be easier to transition to Android without having to downgrade the texting experience.

WhatsApp is great. All my contacts use it whether they have iPhones or android phones.

Whatsapp seems to grow for every day, just a matter of time before it will be huge in the US as well. I think Apple will regret they didn't choose to compete on the software-side with crossed-platform services then. I switch between iPhones and Androids all the time, and one thing is for sure I will not switch to iMessage when I go back to an iPhone ever again. There they lose me as a user of one of their services, hope more people do the same thing.

I think you may find its still messenger in the US not Imessage for non sms/mms based messaging

What little stats you can find and the last trends posted on MR showed this

Of course Imessage is likely dominant among US teens due to Iphone market penetration in that group

It's quite amusing seeing US people hail iMessage as some killer app, going as far as mentioning "blue bubbles" as some sort of social status symbol. The power of any messaging platform is in being hardware/OS agnostic, and Whatsapp has it well and truly beaten there. Add to this that most carries in the world zero-rate Whatsapp traffic and it's a no-brainer, really.

There are some benefits to iMessage over WhatsApp though. Such as, not sharing with Facebook, multiple device sign ins, not tied to phone number, and the big one for me is the 16mb file size limit that iMessage does not have.

Whilst I agree with you in part it does not matter how good Whatsapp and others are if some Iphone users only have fellow Iphone users as contacts they simple do not need cross platform advantages etc and of course its harder for them to nominate default app

But for the foreseeable all will need some form of sms/mms even if its just to receive OTP codes from your bank or other similar sms's

Sorry this is not true 🙁

We all know what happens if you do not disassociate your sim with Apple if you swap phones etc, With Whatsapp once your device is registered you do not even physically have have the sim present

Any laptop can simultaneously run the desktop whatsapp at the same time as your phone

Whatsapp document file limit is 100mb

I didn’t know the 100mb limit. That’s great. iMessage is one of the things keeping me on iPhone to send photos/videos with my wife. Everybody else in my circle is platform agnostic. One less thing keeping me, although the HomePod I just bought will now keep me locked in. 🙄

Big media files you do have to send as documents to get around the default compression but that's no biggie 🙂

Facebook are working on allowing more data sharing between Facebook and WhtsApp, including the WhatsApp stories which I believe is in Beta.

We really cannot say what exactly Facebook and WhatsApp are sharing and not sharing with each other as Facebook owns both platforms.

Facebooks is mostly trying to integrate WhatsApp into its ad business which does use consumer data:

As a digital marketer I cannot wait for this as it opens up even more ways to hyper target audiences, but as a consumer I am a little worried.

But isn’t that why the US is always different, lol!?

They both have their place. If it’s iPhone to iPhone I prefer iMessage. If it’s a mix, I’m seeing that I prefer What’s App. Being that I’m in the US, I can honestly say there’s nothing cooler than meeting someone new and messaging them for the first time and (thereafter) seeing that blue bubble and realizing I can use all the cool features of iMessage, without any extra steps whatsoever. It’s hard to explain, but “it” really is a thing. I didn’t make it that way, I just adopted accordingly.

No actual content of your messages obviously or contacts due to encryption

Like others including Apple they collect things like frequency of use and other statistical data. They do cross reference your phone number used for registration against other facebook apps for cross security issues but this would be similar functionality of say apple ID to some degree

They do note that they can somehow improve your delivery of target material in other affiliated apps but how I'm not sure given Facebook does not require your phone number

If you read the privacy terms and then Apple there is a lot of commonality including Apple trusted partners and that horrid "we may" they use

Of course for the extra concerned or paranoid I am sure there are some niggle bits to be found 😉

Given the popularity of messenger in the US even over Imessage, Whatsapp is your least concern and as any Iphone user knows any green bubble singularly or in a group chat makes makes Apple security irrelevant

A lot of iMessage cheerleaders but another day, another iMessage DoS vulnerability that causes soft bricking requiring a restore. That's why professionals don't use it.

Receiving this message will case Springboard to crash and respawn repeatedly, causing the UI not to be displayed and the phone to stop responding to input. This condition survives a hard reset, and causes the phone to be unusable as soon as it is unlocked. The only way I could find to fix the phone is to reboot into recovery mode and do a restore. This causes the data on the device to be lost though."
