well.

on my 4, I had the signal issue... I touched the left corner and it droped without hasitation.

Now on the other hand, I touch it, hold it for about 1 minute, from 5 bars, 3, 2, 1... i'm continuing to hold for as long as I can, but it just GAINS more in stead of drooping completely?

They fixed it?

Nice. At least more people seem to be not experiencing the signal problems.

I'm sure it isn't completely fixed, but good for you!

Not sure what you are really saying

The bars drop as before but then continuing to "death grip" makes them bounce back to 2 or 3 bars. I have this consistently now: starts with 4 or 5 bars, drops to 1 bar, goes back up to 3. No dropped calls so far and data seems fine...

Oh, I see thanks

just downloaded this today. The result? Still same issues, dropped calls and voice breaking.

Its worse for me o2 uk now i have 4 bars something I never had on the 3gs and now I have 1 bar when holding and crackles in calls!

run a 3g speed test while holding the corner.

my iphone4 has been fine since day one but I always use the bumper. Has anyone having the reception problem tried the phone with a bumper?

I heard somebody say this with the 4.1 beta and I totally scoffed at it but now I see;

The new bars are kind of ugly.

I guess the idea is to show people that they have 1 bar (previously looked like 0 at a glance) since the iPhone 4 is so much more comfortable in lower signal areas... (or so they say)

I just downloaded it right now ...I will let you guess what happened

Damn, your poor phone, look how fuzzy the letters are. It's almost like you upgraded to a little bit bigger screen that's way lower quality or something.

No Change in Actual Performance

I have a Launch Day iphone (week 25).

LOCATION # 1 - In my basement, which has a weaker signal.......

IOS 4.0
Laying on desk 5 bars
Deathgrip no case, drops to searching and no service
Deathgrip WITH case, drops to 3 bars, but has good service

IOS 4.01
Laying on desk 4 bars
Deathgrip no case, drops to searching and no service
Deathgrip WITH case, drops to 1 bars, but has good service

LOCATION # 2 - Outside on my deck, good service area

IOS 4.0
Laying on chair 5 bars
Deathgrip no case, drops to 2-3 bars, but has good service
Deathgrip WITH case, sometimes drops to 4 bars, but has good service

IOS 4.01
Laying on chair 5 bars
Deathgrip no case, drops to 1-2 bars, but has good service
Deathgrip WITH case, drops to 3 bars, but has good service

My summary FWIW......

To me this indicates IOS 4.01 only tweaks how the bars are displayed. And they evidently moved the "no signal" threshold down slightly to try and still provide a connection with a weakened signal. (seems like just smoke and mirrors to me)

If you are in a good signal area, the deathgrip with no case, doesn't impact as much. If you are in a weak signal area, it will go to no service without a case.

Even with a case, the iphone (like most phones) is impacted when being held.

I saw mine go up a bar once or twice as well in the grip.

Fixed, I dunno. I'm just trying to not be OCD about it anymore as long as it's working.

4.01 did not solve the antenna issue for me. Took the bumper off and I can't tell any difference except when the phone is on my desk I now have 4 bars instead of 3; when I cover the lower left corner I get no signal. With the bumper on, I still get 4 bars when idle, but goes down to 1, when I cover the lower left corner.

This is from the article on page 1 of our host on Anandtech's testing of the iOS4.01 update just for those who didn't read it.

Notably, Apple has adjusted the bar scale such that the lowest bar remains visible at a signal level down to -121 dBm, significantly lower than the -113 dBm limit in iOS 4.0. Anandtech's report claims that voice and data transmission on the iPhone 4 remained intact all the way down to -121 dBm, bolstering Apple's claims of increased overall sensitivity and reception with the iPhone 4's design.

To me this means that you will have better reception at lower bars, the bars actually have little meaning in reality.

Question - how tightly are you holding it? Try holding it as loose as possible, same position and see if that makes any different at all. Not suggesting you should always hold it that way, just testing a theory. (not a new theory, but I've yet to hear what happens)
