This is very interesting. I'm a video editor, so I'm playing big ProRes media files with effects like color correction and sharpening within Premiere. My current hi-res 2011 Macbook Pro can almost play this in real time, but not quite.

I assumed a new retina MBP running at the same resolution as my hi-res 2011 would be able to handle these taxing tasks better, but maybe not if it's trying to push a non-native resolution.

Hmm.

How do you find this impacts on performance?

The GPU needs to do the extra work of shrinking to fit the display. This impacts performance, which I have to admit, not many people notice. (But as I said, I'd rather avoid this performance impact.)

i use an App Called retina display manager it allows to change res to many things have uploaded screen shot for you.

Thanks, I know that but, again, that comes with a performance hit.

That it makes practically no difference in either case.

Some people seem to be particularly sensitive to blurriness and complain (or are imagining it) and others seem to think that any sort of UI lag or software glitch is indicative of a slow computer (they are wrong).

Why not just go into a store and try it out for yourself? If this is a deal breaker then hands on experience is the only way. Or order one and return it if you don't like it; you have 14 days after all.

I agree. You don't know until you see it in person. I've seen it in store and I've tried running HiDPI 1440x900 on my friend's 13-inch rMBP, but I can see the blurriness (It wasn't extremely blurry, but I just don't like it).

Wait, I'm in the exact same boat with the hi-res 2011 Macbook Pro, and thought I'd be upgrading my resolution by going to a Retina, but is that NOT the case? What do you mean by "effective resolution"?

Everything is rendered twice their original size on a Retina display. So a 2880x1800 display is actually rendering something that's originally 1440x900. That's what I mean by effective resolution.
