Ok so I had it checked with Apple it cleared I went down to the Police station and it cleared I called Apple and asked them to talk to the Original Owner of it, they just called back and he said he had sold it Locally so it has cleared their as well I now plan to enjoy my new Laptop. only thing that was Odd was that the Original Owner was not they guy who sold me the Laptop..... but o well I have done more than my fair share to clear the laptop only problem I am having is I need to wait for the OSX disc's to come in so I can format the HDD and install the software I want.

You did a hell of a lot more then any regular Joe would. Just enjoy the thing and don't worry about it anymore.

I think its great that all of you were right there to preach at him about doing the right thing, but you know what - My guess is that if you were in this situation, you probably wouldn't go out of your way to give it away with no benefit to you. If you would, then kudos to you. You're a better person then I. However, he had preformed due diligence when he first took it to Apple and had them run the serial and anything afterwards was him wasting his time because you guys guilt tripped him into doing it. Congrats on a good deal. Maybe it was stolen. Life goes on, get over it.

Mozze,

Awesome! Enjoy your deal.

I wonder, though, what legitimate reason there might be for people to scratch off the serial numbers (e.g. on this PB, and on the iPod someone mentioned earlier).

I brought that similar question up to the mac. tech and he said it wasn't uncommon for the serial number on those models to fall off

Thank you. This thread is BEYOND RIDICULOUS. Anyone who would go to this length (beyond what has already been done) to try to lose their $800 is rich, an idiot, or controlled to the point of paranoia by fear of what others might think or judge. The original owner either sold this, pawned it, lost it, or it was stolen, and if it were stolen, they likely either deserved to have it stolen (unsecured), and also got an insurance settlement for it to replace it.

But it doesn't matter, people will continue to harp on this for weeks longer. To the OP, I hope you eventually ignore this thread and the can of worms it opened by asking for the opinions of people on this forum. Those of us to whom $800 is a lot are not in the majority here.

Wow, I never thought anyone could have so little conscience. It is not about whether or not $800 is alot of money to you or not, its a matter of doing the right thing. If you think you've purchased stolen goods you have an obligation to attempt to find out if the goods are actually stolen or not. Contrary to what you say no one deserves to have anything stolen, whether its unsecured or not, and lots of people dont have insurance that covers their computers (my homeowners and car insurance aren't going to cover my computer if its not in my house or my car!). The OP is demonstrating a sense of morality and genuine concern for fellow human beings by going to such lengths to figure out whether his purchase is stolen or not, its a shame that some people don't seem to feel that way. Oh, and by the way, $800 is quite alot to me, considering I barely make that in a month.

Great deal I am glad to hear it worked out. You did go way above and beyond what others would do. I just hope that if my powerbook gets stolen, someone with as much bronze as yourself finds it.
