Cancel it now. Don't wait about dreaming about this bargain, get out immediately.

Cancel the transaction as soon as you can. It maybe genuine, but i don't think it's worth the risk in my opinion.

Julie Brewster and David Garten do not sound particulary foreign, and judging by their terrible English, i would say it's fraud.

Hope it all goes well. Please let us know!

Rich.

How do I go about cancelling via paypal?

My credit card company said to wait till the transaction registers on my credit card account before they can do anything. That process takes more than 1 day...and if it is 2days, I'm screwed.

Good luck chatting to PayPal, let us know.

I think it is realistic to assume that it is fraud, but i'm sure that you'll be compensated in some form.

Hope all is well.

Rich.

it sounds like a very good deal IF - you want a 17" laptop POWER PC. just keep that in mind. G4 is a few generations old.

What you should do is - go to ebay.com and click on "Live Help" tell the agent ( if u think the aucttion is fake) that you think so and he'll give u a link and security will check to see if the auction is fradulent. If it is, it will be closed down shortly, if not, go for it.

then sell it back on ebay for like 1700$ haha.

The seller replied via e-mail.

She didn't list contact information or anything. I do have the e-mail in case it is a fake. The english is terrible, not that I'm perfect at it, but you know what I mean.

Hello.
This item in excellent condition with original accessories and by the
documentation it haven't scratchs and damages.
I have received payment subtotal: US $1,318.00
I will transfer money from PayPal to my bank account.
The Item I will be shipped during 2-4 days after reception of money from PayPal into my bank account.
I will inform you.
Thanks.
Can you look in the email header, and copy the line where your ISP received it from the sender's mailserver (and the line below that)

it is going to be several lines down in the header You are looking for the lowest entry where it is "received by" your ISP. Please post that here, you can ### out your personal email address.

So for example, my ISP is Islandnet.com and the sender's is iondesign at IP address 64.69.77.43.

Received: from [64.69.77.43] (port=60541 helo=iondesign.ca)
by cluster07.islandnet.com with ESMTPS (TLSv1:AES256-SHA:256)

Mac000 --- get with the programme here - read the posts. The auction is already over, closed with Buy it Now, and the OP has sent the money.
Whether the machine is a good one or not (and it's one generation old, not a 'few') the real issue is whether the seller is a scammer or not. It is NOT helpful to say what a good deal it is...

I'll check through my e-mail.

I contacted paypal and filed a claim. They will do a complete investigation to find out if the ebay account is stolen, if the paypal account is a sham, and who the true owner of the powerbook is.

The seller(David Garten) did send me a direct email from the ebay account, but if it was a stolen account, it wouldn't make a difference if it was really Julie.

mac000: For 1300, I think anyone would get the last generation powerbook. :) and sell it for 1700. :p

I still am very suspicious. Well, we shall see!

I think you have been taken.
1. The reply email is just to stall you until they can get your money out of PayPal
2. Sellers feedback that he/she left to others is better English than that email.
3. Account hasn't been used in more than a year.

Yeah that English is horrible. And the use of the return key, I saw that a lot when I was trying to start up a cell phone business, seems like a common characteristic of scammers.

Good luck mate!

Yeah

iamhammill and skubish: Yeah, I've been had. I contacted Apple to re-verify the S/N. The two supposed names aren't even on the computer.

Paypal said they are investigating, but they were going to wait ten days before they issue a refund. In two days, my money will be gone... Also, they can only refund me 1,000 dollars out of the 1,300. I don't like the idea of waiting ten days when stealing cash only takes a day or three.

They did say that if the buyer has my money in their account, they would refund all of what I paid. I don't have much faith in the seller keeping my money safe.

Good news is that my credit card company offers a full refund for fraudulent purchases. Should I go through my card company or wait for paypal to take care of it. I don't mind going through telling my card company how it all happened.

k

Well from what I have heard/read you are correct. Once the money is gone from the account PayPal will do nothing. And since he didn't purchase the item directly by credit card he is probably screwed there too :(

Once the payment is made, it's too late to back out...trying to cancel then just ends up being a mess for you if it ends up a legitimate transaction. What an unfortunate time for cold feet! Your best option was/is to wait it out.

Calling PayPal to investigate was premature, as the seller has done nothing wrong yet--just waiting for your payment to clear before sending the merchandise. If PayPal contacts them, that's what the seller will claim and you will have wasted the investigation. If it then turns out to be a scam, you'll have an even harder time getting PayPal to investigate again. If it turns out to be legitimate and you get your money back and the computer, then you're in really hot water.

Your credit card company might be able to help, but of course, not until the money is charged to your account...and they would have to contact PayPal to resolve the issue, which is much different than attempting resolution at an actual retailer, and the credit card company doesn't technically have authority to refund the money unless PayPal is the problem.

Well Guys I got an e-mail from the Ebay seller.

This is what he wrote in the e-mail after I asked him if the item was shipping.

-------------
You don't receive this item!
-------------

Well I'm calling Paypal now to give them the info and track that person down.

It's obvously a scam.

Have a look at the people who recommend this seller. And then look at the people who recommend them. The comments are all the same.

Either that or it's just a hijacked account, which is happening more and more often on eBay. Scammers hijack reputable members' accounts who have decent feedback to sell one large item that they usually don't have (taking a "picture" of the merchandise from somewhere off the web, or some other auction) and state within the auction their own email/paypal address for the item. eBay is getting worse and worse regarding these scammers...

I have good news for you. Since you just paid the guy through PayPal a couple of days ago, the money is still in his PayPal account. It takes 3-4 business days to withdraw it to his bank. In the mean time, if you file a claim with PayPal, they will freeze any withdraws on his account. That may be why he said you won't receive the item because he can't get his money after you filed the claim. PayPal's 10 day waiting period for a claim is intended to give the seller time to respond to the claim so that buyers just can't request a refund and get in instantly regardless of the situation. You may not get it back right away but I am very sure that you will get all of your money back from PayPal within a few weeks.

If it looks to good to be true...

you know, when i received those "ebay" and "paypal" "warning" mails, i did actually click virtually eeverylink on them. I typed the username to curse their mum, and the password is something that only can be worse .

i enjoy doin such thing

Man, Bocheememon, I feel for you. I've been screwed on ebay before, I once bought a £250 phone that didn't exist. Western Union money transfer too. To the Czech Republic or something. That was years ago though, a good five years ago when I had no clue that people would scam like that, I fell for it like a mofo.

You live and learn though. Now I have a habit of looking at all the feedback, how long ago it was and what the previous auctions were for. Its turned into a bit of an addiction these days though because I like to see what everyone's bought in the past now, sellers or rival bidders!!

I know the feeling. I rather enjoy seeing what people have purchased in the last ninety days on eBay. Sorta like Googling new aquaintences to see what comes up. I Googled my real estate agent and found out that she applied to be on "Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire" and was selected but came to her senses and decided to back out. Never brought it up to her because people don't seem to like it when you google them. Go figure.

Yay

HOOORAYY!!!!

I got my money back!

Thanks guys!

I'm sticking to Apple Refurb, and I'll be more careful before I bid!

whee~! Now I can buy more things and be poor again.

Congrats, and good move listening to us and trying to get it back sooner rather than later. You can still find good deals, but be sure to think about any deals before you go through with them.
