ok, found instructions and added that line to my hosts file on OS X located in /etc/hosts

still no dice. I can't downgrade to 4.0 even though I had shsh for 4.0 saved in cydia

Ok for this you will have to find and download 4.0 for iPhone 4 on the web, once downloaded go back in iTunes and when you get to the restore window hold and press "alt key" (this is for Mac users) then press restore it should then open a window for you to point it to the downloaded file.

Click here for the explanation of why SHSH's are important
(There is a link at the top that jumps you straight to the directions)

To get there on a Mac, from Finder select Go To and type in "/etc". Then do what Saurik says.

tried it once again and now it's restoring. cool.

have to wait and see if I can get past the lock screen this time.

will post back in a few minutes.

EDIT: got to the end of the restore and error message again. bummer. looks like a trip to the apple store is in my future.

thanks for the response. I have already downloaded a copy of 4.0 for my phone (i made sure to grab the right one) and it doesn't work either. says I'm not authorized for the restore.

I think that saurik's server is having the same issue that apple's is.

basically my iphone doesn't know what it is anymore. it does not know the model, the serial number, the capacity, or the software version. it's 100% bricked.

therefore my hypothesis is that when I connect to saurik's server, it thinks I have no shsh files on backup because my phone doesn't pass on any useful information.

oh well. life is what happens when you're busy making other plans.

thanks for the help everyone. I think this one is beyond repair.

Double check your host file entry, did you press enter after entering "74.208.105.171 gs.apple.com" without quotes.

Or try pointing to your 4.0.1 from apple in ~username/Library/iTunes/iPhone/Software Updates/

I did press enter and I tried it with both the 4.0 backup and the 4.0.1 in the itunes folder.

That sucks, anyways goodluck with apple hopefully they don't give you a hard time. Let us know how this goes.

I'll post back once it's all said and done. Hopefully things will go smoothly. Will either be Saturday or Sunday.

Went to apple store.

they looked at the phone, checked for water damage, and gave me a new one. suspected hardware failure.

thanks for help everyone.

also, this KB article mentions the 0049 IMEI address as well linking it to a hardware failure, so I had it on backup in case they challenged me on it.

Told you that you'd be fine :)

Glad they got it squared away for you. Now get TinyUmbrella and back your SHSH's up locally and on Saurik's server!
