I acquired my Dual 450 GbE from a friend who originally got it from someone who worked at Apple. I was told that Apple had built the machine as a prototype. I noticed on the back where they usually list the configuration, was blank, but this in and of itself was not proof of my Mac's unique origins. However, while installing an Airport card yesterday, I noticed a sticker on the inside of the machine. I'm paraphrasing here because I'm not at the machine, but it basically said "This machine is not for sale or resale because it has not been evaluated by the FCC". This may be commonplace, but I thought it was kind of intersting.
Sounds like a custom build by apple, it probably is no different from the final one released apart from the small details you have mentioned.... Anyhow its a pretty cool piece of kit to have.. ShadOW
Did you receive any documentation of its origins? You should treasure your Mac. I didn't. Did own one unique Mac, it was an Apple IIgs. Got a certificate of authenticity as the Woz edition sign by Woz and the developers. It was traded in for a newer Mac, but I kept the certificate.
Wow, that's cool. Personally, I would keep it rather than sell it - the cool value is too much to not hang on to it.
Haha it's really tempting to keep it, especially considering the components, but I just bought a used G5 tower a couple days ago, and it's hard to justify having both!
We just had a Prototype PowerMac G4 thread in the Apple Collectors section sent back to 2003, after somebody brought it back by complaining about people brining back dead threads. But the photos and links in the thread are long dead. However if the member is still active you might be able to find out how much they sold their machine for. His was a true prototype with a non-standard MB, yours may have been a near production machine loaned to developers or used internally.
GREAT GOOGLY MOOGLY! That is awesomely cool! ..now I want a prototype Mac. Oh well, more money going into computers!
If you have a G5 desktop already and are not a collector, put it on ebay and list it as a prototype, you will be sure to get a number of collectors interested...It may fetch more than you expect, ShaDOW
I think mine has a standard motherboard. I'll see about taking some pictures tonight after I get out of work if anyone is interested.
