Hey guy's,
I'm very sorry if this question has popped up before. I can't find any thread though.

I'm on a 5,1 Mac Pro. I was running High Sierra and updated my old cheese grater with a non flashed, metal supported GPU, thus no boot screen. Now I can update too Mojave. Great!

All went well, firmware update and a restart.
The only thing is, I can't see any progress during the update.
I'm afraid I made a terrible mistake as I'm waiting on some sign of life for more than an hour.
Is there an action required during the update? The vents speed up from time to time but I still have no chime, no screen, no nothing :-(
Should I force quit the machine and put my old GPU back in? Should I wait?
What happens when I interrupt the update?

I have no idea what's going on.
All help and suggestions are very much appreciated!

Cheers!

Edit: I've put in the original GPU, Mojave installed and runs OK. But after putting back the GTX680, fans are fully blowing and the MP is not booting :/

You didn't specify which GPU... I'll bet it was an Nvidia GPU of some sort, right? I had the same issue with my 4,1. I ended up buying a new AMD RX580 because the Nvidia GPUs were no longer supported. The AMD card is not flashed so I don't see boot screens (the Nvidia was), but it appears once the OS is loaded.

So, why not leave well enough alone?
Why try to fix it if it's not broken?
What am I missing here?
I am mainly a Logic X and Da Vinci Resolve user. I Had Catalina running and it ran well. But due to AVX issues in Logic 10.6 I wanted to downgrade to Mojave and run Logic 10.5. Da Vinci 17 also runs on Mojave. I guess I could just had Logic 10.5 installed on Catalina but that boat has sailed :/

Its a EVGA gtx 680 classified 4gb.

I dont think so, I used a lot of gtx680 and never got to such an effect.

if you want to double check Dump your current Mac Firmware (extremly important)

and flash the generic Firmware mp51.fd extracted of the 10.14.6 full installer.

dont do this without a Backup as the Firmware contains specific hardware IDs of your machine.

as a first step you can also do a deep nvram reset (4 times in a row, hold the keys, keep holding until the mac chimes 4 times).

but as written, I dont think this is firmware related.

You are right, it had nothing to do with the firmware. I removed all SSD's, unplugged everything but the essentials, took out the GTX, powered off and went to bed :) This morning I put all back together one by one and now it works! I have no idea what it was. Thanks for your help all!
